You can definitely do it, if you find a head unit cheap enough. That's the biggest expense in the kit, but you can basically complete it with new parts you can order from superchargersonline.com (I highly recommend them, by the way. Great vendor to deal with).

I'm guessing this is the thread you saw on another forum? We had one about it back in October of 2007 (link)

It cant be done for cheap. Its all the little crap that will eat away at your budget. I did my vortech for 2600 including tune.

used non intercooled kit 1600
used 03 cobra 39lbs injectors 150
new airfilter (old one was trash) 35 from summit
Lightning maf 70 from ebay
focus svt pump 60
new vac hose and intake hoses 25
boost guage 25 ebay
wideband 235 ebay
misc. stuff for supercharger (colant extension, new pulleys hardware) 100
ev1 to ev6 injector adapters 30 ebay
tools for taping oil pan 30
new oil and filter 30 walmart
dyno tune 200

all this comes out to 2556 there are some other little stuff that i didnt list like fuse taps for my guages, rtv, thread locker and some other tiney suff that puts it right at 2600. So it can be done on the cheap but like I said all the little stuff will kill you and if you dont have to have gauges ( I wouldnt recomend not running at leasta boost and wideband) it will cost less overall.

it can be done. thats what i did. I got my head unit for $1300 and pieced everything else together. The reason i did it this way is because everything that normally comes in a full kit was worthless to me besides the bracket. I wouldnt have used anything else since i have an intercooler, boost pipe, cobra pumps and tank. So it actually saves quite a bit of money if you know what you are doing.

any v1 or v2 will work. You need a straight discharge pipe, curved is for 5.0 stangs. I wouldnt bother with a rebuildable head unit due to the fact that you really dont know what you are getting and rebuilds can cost $500 depending on what is needed. V1s also required smaller pulleys to make the same boost as a V2 due to the different gearing of each. If you go with a V1 and ever want to really push the limits of the blower you will probably have to get a overdrive crank pulley to ward off belt slip. There was a new head unit on ebay the other day for $700 or something close to that.

You can often come across complete Saleen twinscrew units that are taken off of to make room for a KB or whipple. I've seen those go for around $2000 and there's no tapping of the oil pan required. Vortech's are nice, but a twinscrew/roots set up will throw you back in your seat from 1500RPM all the way up to the top, where the Vortech boost normally kicks in around 3-3.5k

I personally dont like the saleen kits due to having to pay a arm and a leg for parts. They also dont really have any room for serious growth. They can be a good deal at times but not really worth it IMOP. All you can really do with that blower is port it and thats about it. The vortech however is another story. You always have the option to upgrade your standard S-trim to a E-trim, SI-trim or a T-trim. There are plenty of HD T-trim cars out there making 600+ rwhp, and even a few S-trims too. How many saleen blowers do you see pushing that much HP? I have yet to find one and I did a good amount of searching when I was deciding on a blower.

Also taping the oil pan is no big deal really. The hardest part for me was finding the correct tap (must be a NPT tap) and a big enough punch. all you have to do is take you sweet time with it, make sure you poor a quard of oil down the oil drain line when you done and thats it. I think that tapping the oil pan for the vortech scares alot of people away but its nothing to be scared of. If you feel you can put a supercharger on your car you can tap the oil pan too.

boost comes on around 3-3.500 rpm with the standard 3.6 pulley. when you start upping the boost for more power boost will start to come on a sooner. I have been told that people that are spining there S-trims to the max start seeing 4 psi around 2-2.500 rpms at WOT. Its not twin screw territory but it will still throw you back in the seat. I am running a 3.6 pulley on my car non intercooled and on the dyno I am making more hp at 3800rpms then I was with bolt-ons and tune at 6000rpms. at that same rpm I am a hair under 350ftlbs. What I am getting at here is that you may not see a giant increase at 1500rpm but your still making more power then you would normally N/A and you do notice a difference so its not like the blower isnt there in the lower rpms.

Agreed on the saleen kit - but for a $1500 budget it's not bad at all. As soon as my tax return comes in I'll be doing the same thing with a TorkTech or V3. Let us know how the build/install goes, get some pictures!

both the tork tech and V3s are so new I doubt you will find a used one and if you do it will be low milage and people will want more then 1500 for them. From you last two posts it seems like you are worried about taping the oil pan, why? like I said its cake you just have to take you time.
