Ryan,

For what it's worth, my Merkur is virtually an SVO with a different wrapper (yet very very different in a lot of ways) and shares the exact same engine. The XR4Ti is actually about 300lbs lighter than the SVOs, and have one of the lowest aerodynamic drag ratings of their time, which you would think all adds up to better mpg...but not really. Mine is still very close to stock and only gets 25mpg which is right at what they're rated at by the factory. Once you start upping the boost and adding toys to it, that number is going to drop. If you were to take a 3.08 equipped 5.0 5 speed and drive it reasonably, you'd be at least 20mpg on the highway so it's really not that huge of a difference. By the time i get mine intercooled and all the supporting goodies needed to run 25psi, it'll probably be around 20mpg itself (although i'll be making 300hp at the wheels compared to the 225hp at the crank of the stock 5.0).

It's all in how you look at it i guess.

Oh and i'll also add....that 300hp might sound awesome, but for the money you can probably have 400hp with a 5.0...that's the reality of having twice the displacement. Also my 2.3 is gonna take a lot more attention than your 5.0 will at the same power levels, so it's going to stay more expensive...which if you can't afford the gas bill for a 5.0 you won't be able to afford the attention to detail bill of a turbo car either.

Keep the 5.0. I've thought of selling mine a few times...but I just cant. You'll regret it. Just get a good paying job (i'm jobless now and looking too) and you should be fine. With power comes bad gas mileage...its just a price you have to pay...and boy it's worth it.

I've been getting around 210-220 miles on a tank. My friend's '91 stock 4-door Accord gets about the same mileage, so at least that makes me feel a little better. Ryan, obviously you have put a lot of work into your car, just keep it, it will pay off over time, don't expect changes over night. And I know what you mean about finding a job, around here there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING! Unless you have 5 years experience in something or you're a nurse. Times are tough right now.

Let me be the firt to tell you. Gas milage in a svo will suck balls too. The idiot behind the wheel has as much to do with gas milage as the engine. That being said, If you can find someone with a "nice" SVO that will trade you for your car DO IT!!!!!!!! The value of your car is not much and will not become real desirable for some time. The SVO is a classic and the value keeps going up. If you could find a car with a turbo coupe conversion I would still say do it. Hell I would love to have a 79-86 coupe with a turbo 4 in it!

Yeah, i'm almost obsessed with finding a mint condition '79 coupe and throwing a turbo 2.3 in it. I wanna build the hell out of it but still leave it bone stock looking like this:

I'd even leave the hub caps on it and run around with 25psi with a nasty sleeper daily driver.

Should be getting like 300 from a tank, if yer having that bad a milage problem, and you don't wanna take your foot out of it, just keep doing it- either the police or an ambulance will do it for ya!

The AODs will get horrible gas milage with the wrong gears. Have you re-done the bearings recently? A lot of factors can affect gas milage. Tire inflation, bearings, U-Joints, Transmission, and then the actual engine efficiency.

But yeah, a 20 year old V8 just isnt going to get any magical mileage.

My gas mileage went from 17-18 to 21-22 when I went from 2.73s to 3.55s back when I had an AOD.

honestly ryan...i think your a kid. what i mean by that is that you'll never be happy man, you can talk like you've been around the block once or twice but the fact of that matter is that you haven't. now im not trying to discourage you by any means, and i dont mean to talk down to you either, but quit thinking of **** like that man, your cars not even done and your already thinking about flipping it? cmon dude, chances are if you can't keep this your not gonna keep the svo, then youll hate the next car...you see where this is going, stick with a car, keep it a few years, i know that doesn't mean much coming from ME in particular, but it'll take you a couple cars to finally figure out the pattern.

very well put. ryan you have alot of energy and from the posts I read from you, also alot spinning around in your head. you need to take a step back because honestly you are all over the place. you'll make a post about setting a goal for 280whp and then talk about crappy fuel mileage and buying an svo.two end s of the spectrum and it makes it hard to follow you. you are only 16 and you have a ton to learn and so many cars are going to slip through your hands when you look back it this you will be shaking your head and chuckling. take the others advise and take it slow, learn some things with this car, build a nice daily with nice respectable power, set it up with good gears and learn something in the process that you can build from and apply to the next car. you are on the right track and got a good head on your shoulders give it time .

Gas milage also depends on driving style a lot.

I've done a best of 325miles to a full tank in my '03 GT

But then the next week will be gorgeous weather and i'll drive spirited and get 140 miles to a tank of gas.

When I had a bone stock 88 mustang drivetrain in my car with an AOD and 2.73s at best I got 16 mpg in the city, normally it was around 14-15. The mileage I stated earlier was highway mileage. Gears will help tremendously. It didn't bother me back then though because gas was like $1.20 a gallon.

I paid 40 bucks for a fill up today!! I walked up to the counter and asked the guy if I prepaid and ended up not using it all could I get my cash back and he said sure no problem, well I used all 40 bucks and filled it up completely, 14.03 gallons or something... PERFECT!!

BTW I got 202 miles on the last tank, lasted me from last sunday to today. I still can't figure out how you are driving 360 miles a week with a permit.
