thanks! the fronts are 17x9's with 245/45's. they are definitely borderline too big. with my 87 fenders, they rub the fender extensions when turning and i had to use rack limiters. I have a set of 91-93 fenders i'm about to put on it in hopes of curing the rubbing issue.

I don't want anything larger than a 225 in front on mine, and since 9" won't work, 8" is out of the question because it looks funny, I am seriously considering buying 9" rims and having them drop shipped at a company that narrows/widens aluminum rims, and having them cut down to around 7" wide. It will add $125 to the price of each front wheel, but in the end I will have exactly what I want.

What size you have in back?
I would like to try for 315s, but not sure they will work.
Some guys have done it with the SCs, but they did alot of mods, and I would think they still put up with some clearance issues.

Yeah narrowing a set of 9s sounds like the solution you're looking for. I may consider doing that

I have 285/40s on 17x10s out back. Quads had to be removed and I rolled the quarters. There is about 1/2"-3/4" of clearance between the inside of the wheel/tire and wheel well and I've never had them rub yet. I'd image a 315 will definitely require some BFH persuasion or mini tubs.

Well, just off the top of my head... we are talking about a tire that is roughly 1" wider, and on the same rim, that would add 1/2" on each side.
So yeah, it's be really close. If you look around the Stang boards at guys with 315s on their SCs, none of them talk about "proper" tub mods, but they all refer to the BFH.

The 315 will be slightly shorter than a 285, and that might actually help from your perspective.

Why do you think 8" wheels look funny? The black coupe I posted earlier has 8" wheels all the way around and IMO I think they look great.

I've got 9" wide on the front of mine, with 255's on it and I'm going to have to do a little finagling this spring to get the look the way I want. I'm thinking of widening the front fender a tad and taking the heat gun to the inner fender wells. Ideally, a 275 is what fits best on a 9" wheel...but that could be a real stretch. A former member of this site had them on the front of his car and they did IMO look quite good...but he had to do a little body work to make them function.

I've got 275's on the rear, on 17x10's and I'll tell you right now, the 275's on 10's look as stretched as 245's on 9's. In both cases, I can see the lip of my rim sticking out past the tire and it's not a look I'm comfortable with. Not only does it make the tire look stretched, but it offers zero curb protection.

Besides...a little bit of tire on the side adds to the "muscle" look of the car IMO.

you're probably correct about 315's, they may be a little closer to fitting than i know of; i've never had larger than these 285's so i really wouldn't know.

gearbanger, i think he just means the SC's in 8" look funny, which i kind of agree. there is very little lip on them, and they are pretty "simple" looking wheels...flat spokes, flat lip. without a decent size lip on them, they look just that, flat. and you are correct, there is zero curb protection on both 245's on 9" wheels and 275's on 10's. don't ask me how i know.

You misunderstood.

I want SCs, and the 8" SCs have too much backspace, which makes them look like FWD rims.
Not only do they not have any dish, the face of the rim is actually pushed out a bit if you study it.
Combine the FWD look in the front, and 3" dishes in the rear, and it looks funny (to put it nicely).
All they had to do was put just a touch less backspace and it would have been fine.
That, and add an inch to the diameter.... I can't understand why they won't make an 18" SC, I have seen enough people asking for them that it would be worth their while.

I have studied the idea of having the 9" rims narrowed, and it is fairly appealing.
You can have the rims drop shipped, and the first thing they do is check the runout, which most folks never do when they get 'cheap' replica rims. If the runout is bad, they send them back and try for a good set. Then they can narrow them quite a bit, depending on backspace and how much "flat" area they have between the critical points of the rim design. I figure I could get 9" rims down to at least 7" wide, if not close to 6". That will leave me with the ability to run 215-225ish tires up front without have them stretched on, and I will have a bit of lip on the front side of the rim to keep it from looking funny. With 285s or 315s out back, it should be a pretty radical fat/skinny look that most folks don't have without Drag Stars or similar rims.
