Symptoms of a Bad Timing Chain?

How will the car act? Mine will start if I adjust my distributor a bit, then sputter, then die. Car has 156K on the clock. Some old mechanics I have talked to all said the same thing after they heard my car...

Check the timing with a timing light/gun.

If it fluctuates like crazy, this shall be your timing chain.(can be your balancer as well)


I hope your not adjusting your dizzy without removing the spout and WITH a timing light/gun.

to check to see if your timing chain has a problem, remove dizzy cap and then rotate engine slightly by hand off the balancer nut, then go back the other way, if there is more than an 1/8th inch play in the dizzy pointer, when you change directions, you need to change your timing chain, which is easy.
