It's really hard to get the car in second gear when I'm driving I have to pull so hard on the shifter I think I'm going to break the handle. Hits all the other gears fine. I'm thinking my 1-2 synco is the problem but haven't had a chance to tear it down to see what's wrong. If the syncro is the case what is exaclty involved in replacing just the 1-2 syncro and can I buy it seperate. I want to fix this as cheaply as possible. I'm not pumping any major cash into a crappy T-5 so I just need it to get by for this summer. Did a search but didn't really find a how to.

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ may have a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

You can get a syncro kit pretty cheap. If you're in there its cheap enough to just replace them all. You'll be taking off most of the rings just to get to the 1-2 ring anyway.

The synchro blocker ring just for 2nd is only a $20 part.

But you need to be careful about grinding as each grind damages the gear and the 1-2 slider. If they are damaged enough you'll need to replace them. You can get new aftermarket replacements from ebay for about $40 each.

If you aren't grinding and it's just hard, try skipping that gear from now on til you tear down and inspect.

Yes, don't force it into gear, just skip it. But don't wait too long. I didn't have time to work on mine many years ago and skipped second for a good week or two, and ended up breaking something really major off in the tranny and damaging the shafts. Ended up paying Ford to put in a new FMS tranny ($1,500 with labor and tow).

Good luck on it, hopefully it is a cheap easy fix.

Thanks for the replies. I would just skip 2nd all together but I want to take it to the track so I kinda need it. It doesn't grind into 2nd but it's extremely hard to get in.....and no possibility of racing it with the way it is. Anybody have a Part# for just the 1-2 synchro? I can't find on anywhere...all I'm getting is the complete rebuilds. Dealer part?

Little peice of advice. You said you wanted to keep this cheap? I wouldn't be racing your car with a damaged trans. You are only one hard shift away from an easy fix to spending $350 on a new 2nd gear, 1-2 slider and rebuild kit. Skip 2nd til you pull the trans out and inspect.

HMS83K WC BLOCKER RINGS $50.00

Hanlon only sells the synchro blockers in pairs, so that is the price for both 1st and 2nd. They also sell the inner blockers for $14 but unsure if you could get away with just those. You'll have to open the trans up first to see what you need.

Haha sounds like my car.... 2nd is shot, but i can ease it in sometimes. Otherwise it sounds like.. GEENKK GENNKK trying to get into 2nd. I've just been skipping 2nd and hitting 3rd. Might be a bend shift fork, have you considered that? Pulled my tranny today and gonna open her up tomorrow to see what prob is.

Hold off on the rebuild.

check your clutch adjustment first, that could be your only problem. What you describes best tells of a clutch adj too loose.

Does your clutch grab RIGHT off the floor?? If so, it's too loose. In my experience, when a sincro goes, most of the time you get a grind, this doesn't seem to be your case.

read the link in my sig for complete clutch adj info.

Just put in a new SPEC stage 3 a few weeks ago. Shift fork was fine. Actually It is grabbing a little low so maybe I'll bring up the pedal a little more. I haven't driven the car in so long I don't remember how the trans was when the car was last together been a few years so my memory is a little cloudy.

well, I just don't want to pump any major cash into a T-5. If I grenade it, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. A tremec was on my list for awhile I've just put my mustang projects on the back burner for awhile to pursue other interests. Once I pull it apart I'll see whats wrong with this POS trans. Thanks man, at least I know where to get the parts should I need them.

yeah, let me know what you find. My shift fork was fine. Probably the only thing that hasn't broke on the car yet.
