t-5 bearing retainer install?

Hey all, well I pulled my tranny today and the bearing retainer was broken. The shaft had broken off of it by the base. Is this common? W hat causes these to break?
Also is there a certain way to install these or is it just slap it on and go? I read somewhere that it might need to be shimmed? I am getting the part from Ford. It will be in tomorrow. Should I replace the bearing while I am at it? How hard is it to get the bearing off of the input shaft?

If you pull the input shaft, just rebuild the whole tranny. You may loose all the roller bearings, that are housed in the input shaft, into the tranny if you take it out with the tranny sitting on a table.
It's best to leave the input were it is, and just replace the retainer. And you may need to shim it.
For the best source of info, do a search. This question was just asked.
Anyway, don't bother replacing the bearing. Just pull the old retainer, extract the race for the bearing that is in the retainer. Put the race in the new retainer and bolt it back on.
Now you need a dial indicator, or some way to check endplay.
Stang the tranny on its end with the input shaft facing down, but don't place the input on the ground. Now press up on the input shaft and measure the movement of the output shaft. This is endplay. It should be at about .002".
Once the endplay is in spec, unbolt the retainer, put some sealant on it, and bolt it back on. Then fill the tranny with ATF, once it is in the car, and your on your way.
Hope this helps.

Do a search on my name I replied to the topic proxes is referring to...

Did you order the STEEL Ford retainer? If not, get one the stock ones are aluminum and are very popular for cracking or breaking as yours did, if you are lucky Ford may have shim packs if not Hanlon and D&D carry them in stock.

Proxes, i have been reading these retainer threads so i know what to do when i go one. this is from the last thread on it. i am either confused or you mis typed. in the previous thread you say to have the input shaft facing up, and in this one, have it facing down. i normally would not say something, but this is pretty important. dont want needles all over inside the trans.
here is the last thread's post:
http://forums.stangnet.com/showpost.php?p=3864146&postcount=2

which is right? i really appreciate it. i dont want to mess it up when i do it.

BTW, here is the whole thread that Rick is talkin about:

Ahhh.
If you only want to pull the retainer, have the tranny facing up. The weight of the input shaft will hold it in place, so you won't have to worry about loosing the needle bearings.
If you want to pull the input shaft, the method I posted above, then face the tranny down, so all the needle bearing fall out with the input shaft. But if you are pulling the input shaft, you may as well just rebuild.
Also, I stated that the tranny has to be face down to check endplay. The retainer must already be bolted on before doing this.
OK?

If you order the retainer from Ford, it will be a steel retainer. The aluminum is obsolete.

sorry proxses, i cant read

proxses, thanks so much for the info. i apologize for missing the two different aspects you were talkin about (input shaft removal vs. retainer only). my bad.

to do the retainer only: remove the old one, with the input shaft facing up. bolt in new retainer and turn trans (shaft down) per your instructions, to check endplay.

i think i got it. sorry again. great info!

PS: i dont know how the whole thing works. when the old retainer is yanked, there is a bearing on it (i assume for the front of the input shaft)? i think you said to not replace it. why? is it a difficulty issue, or something else? the only pics i have seen of the retainer were the 2 from the other thread, so im not too sure about this. thanks so much :nice:

Well the bearing gets pressed on the imput shaft, and if it is making noise it could mean a few things, one is the tranny was low on fluid, second it could be ready to blow apart. Did it whine in all gears but barely hear it in 4th?

The front bearing starves for fluid in a T-5 just a bad design and when the tranny is low on fluid it is even worse.

Well I went and picked my new retainer up today. And they said I do not need to shim it out? This was coming from Ford. They said just bolt it in and put tranny back in. So I stopped by a local tranny shop and they said the same thing. So now I am confused. What should I do? Bolt it in or shim it?
