I'm finally gonna pull my tranny to see why i'm having trouble shifting gears. From what i've read, i think it might be the clutch fork or the front bearing retainer. I read that stock retainers are "prone to gall, causing the clutch to neither engage or disengage fully." What does gall mean, and what should i look for? If i need a new one, is the one Jegs sells any good? They sell a cast iron one for $40. Also, is it just a matter of unbolting the old one and bolting on the new one, or is there something more involved? thanks

What do you mean when you say your having trouble shifting gears. Is it grinding or is it just hard to get in gear. I've never heard of a bearing retainer causing this, usually they just cause a lot noise and rough engagment of the clutch which you will feel through the pedal.

If your having problems shifting gears it may actually be something internal in the trans or even the clutch pedals adjustment if you have the stock quadrant pull up on the pedal with your foot to adjust it or look into getting a firewall adjuster.

a galled bearing retainer will cause the throwout bearing to get caught and make the clutch pedal feel un-smooth and possibly get stuck.

Tell us if your clutch is disengaging properly or the transmission seems to be hard to get into gear. This will help narrow it down a little.

Yeah, i have trouble engaging and disengaging clutch. I have an aftermarket quadrant, firewall adjuster, and kc clutch. I did replace the cable a few months ago and it really didn't help. When i start of in first, i have to push the pedal all the way to the floor, and the clutch is still trying to grab. As i release the pedal, the clutch grabs a little more when it is barely off the floor. Then the pedal doesn't release the clutch fully till its almost all the way up. Then when i shift, i have to pull it out of gear without using the clutch or its hard to get out of gear. Then i push in the clutch and wait for it to fall into the next gear. Most of the time it's easier to shift without the clutch. It's making me crazy!!

I got started on pullin the t-5 this afternoon. Should have it out tomorrow, so i'll be posting some pics. Maybe someone can help diagnose any possible issues that could be causing my problems. Those driveshaft bolts are a big pain in the butt!!

Sooo, is the Jeg's bearing retainer any good for $40? Or should i get another one. I really don't wanna pull the tranny again any time soon.

Summit has a ford racing one for around $30. I have it and it works great, but from what you describe i still dont think thats your problem. It still sounds to me like the cable is out of adjustment. If the pedal goes all the way to the floor than the throughout bearing isnt getting stuck. If it was the pedal wouldn't want to go all the way down. Try backing your firewall adjuster almost all the way out and see what that does to the clutch disengagement.
