T-5 input shaft swap

A guy at a junkyard is giving me a good deal on a T-5 ($400), but its from a 94 Mustang. I have heard that in order to make it work with a '86 bell housing the input shaft and front bearing retainer have to be replaced with one from an earlier T-5. Is this true? I have looked around on the web but did not find a 100% answer.

Not quite sure what forum to put this in, but since its about a t-5 conversion for a Classic Mustang...

Take my advice please....just save that 400 and find one from a 88-93...you will probably have 400 more in that tranny just to make it fit. Keep your eyes open and you can find one that fits your application for 400 bucks. 400 for a 94 is not a great deal....those are usually cheaper anyway because they are not readily usable on a 302.

94/5 were the last years of the 5.0L/302. You can swap the input shaft or find a 94/5 bellhousing (this is the route I went). The difference in the two input shafts is 5/8". That 5/8" put my shifter right in the middle of the stock trans hole. There is one other difference in the bells. The 94 and later have the clutch fork moved lower on the housing. This may or may not work depending on the headers being run. In my case, it gave me some additional clearance on my Flowtech long tubes.

I paid for 87 WC $200 (a guy blew the 3rd synchro) in DC area where everything is expensive. Later found 98 t5 and yard wanted $120. If I recall correctly the shaft can be easily cut+machined.

Its about the simplest parts swap Ive ever done! Im running a T-5 from a 95 cobra paired up with a '92 Bellhousing. Swapping the input shaft took me about 20 minutes, I had a Junk '92 T-5 with the correct input shaft. The swap was almost too easy, I just unbolted the front bearing retainer, pulled out the input shaft and stuck the correct one back in, works perfect.

Thanks for the info, I ended up buying the trans today. I'm going to swap out the input shaft and get a steel bearing retainer.

also buy steel shims - you are likely to end up with incorrect input bearing preload
