t-5 input shaft trouble

So here is my problem. I am almost have completed my t-5 rebuild, and now its time to add in the shims for the input shaft. The input shaft and bearing retainer spins until I started to tighten up the bolts then the input siezes up. Also the gap around the bearing retainer and the input shaft doesn't seem to be even. The bearing retainer is straight and sits flat on the case with the input shaft removed. is it possible that with the race installed with the shims its not seated flat in the bearing retainer, thus when its tighted up making the gap messed up? Any tips will be helpful. Thanks

Pictures would be great in this case, so we could see what you are talking about exactly. But right away I'm gonna say the obvious, make sure your not leaving any debris in the assembly that could be throwing the race off-axis. Also, when its all assembled, it shouldn't be so tight that its hard to turn. I don't remember the specs for end play, but you don't want it locked down.

Test fit the race in the retainer before you install. In fact, i usually put the race in the retainer and then lower it down on the bearing.

Also, the first time you instlal, do it without any shims. Then measure endplay and shim accordingly

I got to mess with the tranny today, and the bearing retainer and race are square. After playing around with the input shaft and bearing retainer today, I think the alinement is ok. But now I wonder if the drag on the input shaft is normal. I cant really spin the input shaft by hand. But if I a pair of plyers i can spin it fairly easily. should the shaft be able to be spun by hand? The output shaft spins normally

input shaft not spinning

Did you happen to change any of the gears and/or cluster shaft during the rebuild. Ran into same problem one time and fought it for hours. Come to find out the 3rd the company sent me had a different number of teeth on it to go with the cluster gear they had sent to replace also. Count the teeth on your gears and make sure its the correct number. hope this helps

Ya that actually happend to me also, they sent me third gear had an exrta tooth. That was rather interesting. Well about the drag on the input, I rebuilt almost the whole main shaft. As it is right now there isn't a really that much oil in it. Also, all the gears and input spin freely without the bearing retainer. Its almost like there is too much preload maybe.

Well, I took the tranny apart today. Then I found that second gear had an extra tooth. I need to locate a new second gear then I will put the tranny back together. I think I found the problem. Thanks guys for all your help. I'll let you know how the rest of the rebuild goes.
