depends on the load on the gears in the tranny, well kinda but anyway, need to replace your synchros etc. in the tranny

Most likly time for a rebuild.. I had the same thing .. It use to pop out of 1st.. then over time 3rd. then Reverse... What it is this that the Synchros ( sorry for the spelling) get worn out and dont hold the gear. Over time it will just let go.. just be prepared to drop about $700 for a T5 swap...

Not necessarily the synchros. You could have to replace the gear that is affected as well.

The dog teeth on the gear and the notches on the synchro sliders are fitted so that when in gear, if you go WOT you cannot pull the tranny out of that gear. WHen the tranny started grinding or you shift into a gear at too high of a speed (missing 3rd and hitting 1st) you can damage those teeth and start to round them over. when they get rounded, they no longer fit into the notches that are supposed to hold them in place. Popping out of gear on the downshift seems to mean the coast side of the gear's dog teeth may be worn down. You may need to replace the synchro 1-2 slider ($85) and 2nd gear ($82). I know because i just did the same thing to a T-5 i have.

Of course all this assumes it's nothing related to shifter, clutch or anything else out of adjustment

yes 5L5 is right, however you don't always have to replace the gear, and i have even cut some of the teeth off of the slider to make it shift quicker at lower rpms. Sometimes you can file the burrs that the missing gears and powershifting puts on the slider, or the gear itself, i was trying to keep it simple.. lol

if you need plan on doing this yourself, i have the sliders if you want them. I will sell them cheaper than you can probably find them to someone on here

Best bet if you don't know what your doing with the rebuild is to pull the tranny yourself, take it to a tranny shop, have them find the problem and you will save the R&R labor which is between $400-500. That is what I did when I had a scratchy 2-3 gear shift at higher rpms. The fix cost me about $200 vs. $800 or more for R&R and rebuild.

I would have to guess that you're synchros are shot, mine were and it did that sometimes, it was hard to slam it into second too w/o it grinding.
