My friend broke his t-5 a while ago, and his looking to get it fixed. Its kind of a long story, but in short, he bent the reverse idler rod. Now he needs to get this replaced, but taking it to a shop will cost major $$$$$. Do any of you guys know where he could buy a part like that. I have tried searchin the internet, but nothing comes up. I was hopin someone on the board works for a tranny shop, and could get me some info. Thanks

Though, I think it's pretty rare for the idler gear rod to bend, so you might be able to salvage the part out of another otherwise bad unit...

The guys at Blumenthal have been a tremendous help to me - also known as RemanExpress... I dealt with Larry Church. I've also had good luck with D&D, and as good as I hear Hanlon is, I can hardly ever reach someone and they never answer my emails. So that's my experience.

Good luck, I don't think I'll ever go through this again it's such a PITA.

My expreience with Hanlon was the same. They NEVER return e-mails and take forever to answer the phone.

Blumenthol is a VERY good company, i have dealt with Larry a lot and he is very good.

But.

I have several of those reverse idler rod's laying around.

$10.00 plus shipping an i'll get ya one. Let me know and i'll snap a pic with the 'ol digital camera real quick let you see it to make sure we're on the same page.

I heard Hanlon isnt looking to good. Probably be out of business soon. D&D always answered my e-mail's and phone calls.

He could rebuild it himself....you can get a T5 repair video form www.eastwood.com. Since Hanlon dosent answer there phones.

Best bet is tell him to take the tranny off the car himself. Watch the video its only 20 bucks and if it looks to difficult bring the tranny to the shop. He will save alot of money on labor if he takes it off himself.

Hey 85 Coupe 5.0: Maybe you can help me... I'd like to say I just finished rebuilding my T5, but when I put the cover, tailhousing and shifter in, the input shaft locks up. I have a hunch it does this after I put it into reverse... any suggestions why?- would have to be in two gears at the same time, right?? I can spin the o/p in every gear but never the input, even in neutral!

...also, my spring mechanism for reverse has the little weird looking spring, not the traditional coil over the bar spring... do you know what I mean? Should I swiitch spring styles? (and do you have one?).

Thanks

Hummm, Jeffdg, that's kinda weird. I have had problems during assembly putting the tailshaft on, you have to wiggle the 5th/reverse shift rod and make sure it isn't in a bind when you are sliding the tailhousing on and at the same time make sure the shiftrod is going in correctly. I really haven't had one that locks the input shaft after assembly tho. The only thing i can think of is, are you making sure everthing is in neutral when you put that top cover lid on? make sure both sliders are in neutral, and most improtant, that the shift rail is in neutral on the top cover lid. Also, it is really hard to keep that shift rail in Neutral while sliding the tailhousing on, but you have to make sure the rail stays in Neutral while sliding it on. really the only thing that can sieze the input is being in two gears, but that should also keep the output from turning too, and you say that it stays free? So when you put it in reverse does the output shaft lock up also?

As for the reverse spring, I have only worked on '85 to '89 World Class T-5's, but i have never seen any other type of spring used other than the rail-through-spring type that you are describing, so I really can't be much help there. I do have one of those laying around, if you're interested. Probaby worth $5.00 or so.

Hit me back with some more info on some of the questions I asked above and we'll try and figure that tranny problem out, it can't be that compicated, they are reasonably simple trannys.

Thanks 85 Coupe 5.0 -

okay, the input is dead locked all the time. The output is free in neutral and locked in any of the six gears (1-5 & R).

...so that tells me that the countershaft is locked up... result of the reverse mechanism? It might be more appropriate to take this to the following forum (my thread where I introduced this problem), which is at:

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=419463

I'll be checking both, thanks again for your help. I'll probably (sigh) tear into it this weekend...

Finished the tranny on Saturday, took a little over an hour (most of that was scraping off the gasket maker for the tail housing). Apparently, I hadn't been meticulous enough in patterning the tailhousing bolts as it was a little cocked. As soon as took a few bolts off, everything freed up. Redid surfaces, put on tail housing, and shifter and I have all six gears again...

Thanks for the help,
