Because it's not supposed to be a press fit. It's a loose fit. If you look on the backside of the tailhousing you'll see a groove that the bearing race slips into. When you bolt the tailhousing on, it presses on the race and makes a tight fit. Most of the time when i take t-5's apart it falls out as soon as i get the tailhousing off. This is how it is supposed to be.

The output shaft will wiggle around a lot with the tailhousing off. The tailhousing is designed to hold it all in place. Ehen without a driveshaft the output shaft will still wiggle as will the input shaft.

You must put a DS yoke inside the end of the trans and then you can see if it will wiggle side to side.

Endplay is the measure of front to back movement of the internals. If you place one hand on the input shaft and one on the output shaft (with trans assembled) and push in and out there should be no play. If there is, you will need to properly shim the input shaft under the bearing retainer.
