i am getting ready to change the tranny in my stang ,the one i took out had 2 plug ins ,one on the drivers side which i am assuming is the reverse light ,and one on the top . the tranny i am putting in only has the plug in on the side , so to make a long story short , what is the sensor on the top drivers side of the tranny for ???? Thanks

It is the neutral safety switch which is used to tell the computer that the car is out of gear. This is used when running the Key On Engine Running diagnostic tests. It has nothing to to with the starter circuit.

Key On Engine Running diagnostic tests - the test jumper or code scanner is connected to the computer diagnostic connector and the engine is started. The computer wants to make sure the A/C is off due to the added load on the engine for the engine running tests. It also checks to see that the transmission is in Neutral and the clutch depressed (T5, T56, Tremec 3550 & TKO)). This prevents the diagnostics from being run when the car is driven. Key On Engine Running test mode takes the throttle control away from the driver for several tests. This could prove hazardous if the computer was jumpered into test mode and then driven.

IF your car is an 86-88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method. There is no functional check engine light on the 86-88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

89 through 95 cars have a working Check Engine light. Watch it instead of using a test lamp.

The Netural Safety Switch code 67 can be bypassed for testing. You will need to temporarily ground computer pin 30 to the chassis. Computer pin 30 uses a Lt blue/yellow wire. Remove the passenger side kick panel and then remove the plastic cover from the computer wiring connector. Use a safety pin to probe the connector from the rear. Jumper the safety pin to the ground near the computer.
Be sure to remove the jumper BEFORE attempting to drive the car!!!

i was told the tranny was from a TB turbo coupe. ,does anyone know if i can just change the top cover so i will still have neutral safty, or should i just find another transmission. also what would be a suitable piolet bearing due to the smaller input shaft? i was told to order one for a 1984 ford ranger diesel?

You may need to change the shift rail as well. Unsure if the provision for the NSS pin is on all t-5 rails. It would make sense however from a manufacturing standpoint.
