Alrite i have a desicion to make i current have a t5 that will not catch 2nd. Ive replaced the clutch and clutch cable still have the problem im assuming i need to rebuild it. Now i know when i rebuild it i want to change the gear cluster to cobra specs. Now i found a cobra transmission for 475.00 150.00 more for shippinghowever i dont know the condition supposively it was rebuilt recently but we all know how that goes. My question is do you think i should just buy a rebuild kit and a new cluster or just take a chance on the cobra transmission???

It seems that around here if one is being sold(even as rebuilt) that there is a reason it is not in a car.... as in its junked. I would save that 625 dollars and just put that towards the rebuild.

Where do you suggest i buy the kit and the gear cluster from? i looked around and found a frpp kit for 250 seems to be the cheapest but where can i find a good gear cluster??

I would just buy a rebuild kit and rebuild your t5 with the gearset you have stock.

If your going to upgrade the gears I would not realy spend the money on a cobra spec setup. I would spend the money on a astro/g-force gearset. IIRC the rebuild kit and much stronger astro/g-force cluster are right around $1100-1200 total for the parts if you plan to rebuild it yourself. After you take away the $200-250 for the rebuild kit and the $400 or so your looking for cobra gearsets...it is not much more to get a much stronger t5 setup.

The rebuild kits are all about the same as they are all the same kit with the same udated parts.

Well i think i have to get a new cluster anyways im pretty sure that i have to replace my second gear anyways do to the fact i cant catch it if my rpm's are above 2000 i dunno what does it sound like to you do you think i need to replace the cluster also no matter what gear im in my tranny is whining..thanks for the help so far and please keep it coming

I am not an expert but the gears could be ok...or toast sometimes a gear not catching is not a busted gear.

Until you take it apart you just wont know 100%.

Like all trannys with this mileage its probably just synchronizer friction material that is gone. And even if you have ruined the dog teeth on your second gear like I did with my first gear when the synchros went you can just replace that gear like I did with my first gear. No need to replace entire gear sets. As for the whining lubrication issues are usually have their first symptom with tranny noises and hard shifting. You might just be low on fluid or need to replace the tranny fluid for now. None the less you should just take the tranny down and replace the synchro's and all the needle bearings that 1st-3rd ride on. Usually the tapered roller bearings dont have any issues so you can always re-use those.

I'm wondering the same. I need a rebuild kit too just not sure where to find the good prices on Tranny Parts. They seem to be harder than regular parts lol.
