T-5 rebuild , basic ?'s

Ok my tranny grinds when I try and shift it fast into 2nd. I could buy a remanufactured t-5 on ebay for about $700 to my door but I am looking into other options. I can drop the tranny on my own, rebuild it with the ford kit that runs about $250. If I choose this path I'm going to buy that video and use it as a guidline. It says it comes with the syncro rings and my question is; are the syncro rings the going to fix this problem? I thought the syncros were a different part but thats why I'm asking. I think thats what is bad on mine and is that pretty common on these t-5s. I know my tranny has seen No2 and I think that is what did it in from the previous owner..

As I'm the process of doing this I plan on replacing the clutch with a cobra unit and the stock shifter with a pro 5.0. I'm trying to do this like most with as little money as I can, But I want to do it right and once...al least untill im out of college......there is always credit I know some will say go tko but that is not an option...this is not a full drag car and I just want this tranny to hold up untill I'm out of college and everything gets a underhaul...

I plan to get 3.73 gears and have a shop do that to make sure everything is set right, but the tranny I think I can do on my own...

This car will not see crazy power levels maybe 75hp over stock and that won't be for a while anywho....

Bummer thats the worst shift to have a problem with. I'm interested to see answers to this post too. I bought my t5 for 150 bucks and it's done great and still does but who knows for how much longer since I don't know how many miles it has on it.

I saw your thread and picked up some helpfull info.. I guess we are pretty much in the same boat, but now I feel retarted for asking about the sinc. rings.... I never really thought of how they worked and now I get it.....

I think I'm going to waite it out a few more days and see what some people say. Then I'll look into a local shop that can help out with the pressing.

Does anyone know where I can get the tools listed in the other thread for a decent price? I would think a place like sears would have them? "snap ring pliers, dial indicater, feeler gauge"

I got snap ring pliers from sears, i already had the other stuff from when my dad was a mechanic, I also have a press which you will need, I got it from Northern Tools.

New syncros will defiantly help but they may not fix your problem completely, or your problem will come back if the dog teeth on the gears are worn out. Sometimes you can use a file to reshape them into points, but sometimes they are worn beyond repair which will require a new gear.

agreed, if you're needing syncro's now, then chances are, it could use a full rebuild.

those snap ring plyers are special snap ring plyers, I found them at mcfaddon and dales without a problem, as well as many of the other tools.....

you're also going to need a press. Most of the bearings can usually be taken off without one, but in my experience there is always one little bugger stuck on....

imo if this is the ONLY time you ever plan on rebuilding a t5, just buy a good quality rebuilt, or have yours rebuilt, not worth the hassle of setting up shop for it, rebuilding in, then possibly having the misfortune of ****ing it up and have to pull it again.

I would agree that it should be left to the seasoned do it yourselfer, someone on an extremely slim budget but the time and tools to do the job right, or a shop. As with any rebuild you run the risk of it breaking again, there's risk involved with anything.

I am the extreme do it yourselfer, and I'm nearly done with mine...it's pretty simple, but I ****ed up installing the tail shaft to the trans, which jammed the reverse/fifth for some damn reason, then I dropped the whole trans on the ground, and now I've got to pull it all apart again, not only to find out why fifth/reverse is sticking, but now to re measure the main shaft to be sure I didn't bend it..urgh.

I know how it can be to not have the option of paying a shop to do it. And there's no better way to learn than by doing. My vote would be to tackle it if you have confidence in your attention to detail and patience level. Those are they keys to success.

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs about $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

Wow thank you very much! I'm going to order the video, watch it, and see what I think....school is out in 4 more weeks and if I think I can do it I will get everything together from the time I get the video, untill school is out. Then its comming out and the rebuild will start in my bedroom....

Ha yea I do sleep with my work but thats because my room is also my shop......I have a girlfriend and actually I'm on spring break at her college for the week....

I drove my stang for the first long trip 7 hours and 400 miles. It went great and the car drove awsome. SIUC baby can't waite to transfer here next year...

I had the same problem. I just bought another T5. The guy that sold it to me sold it fairly cheap. It was out of 93 GT. I only paid $450 which is much less than a rebuilt unit or paying to have it rebuilt. I think he has more. If you want his number PM me. Oh, btw, I found him because he had one listed on Ebay that I didnt win. So I called him and asked him did he have any more. He said yes he had one from a 93 GT. I asked him to post it on Ebay and I would buy it. He did and I bought it.

you just have to look around, there is a guy 30 minutes away from me that charges $60 labor, and whatever parts cost, so for a rebuild kit is right at $200 from most places, so $260, thats cheap to me, BTW your problem may be a bent 1-2 shift fork, ask me how i know, i borrowed another guys shop pulled it out myself, helped take it apart and put it back together, and stuck it back in the car in one night and it was all for $50, i had the problem you talk about, and it was a bent 1-2 shift fork, we threw another lid on it, and it fixed it, next time i will take the tranny to the other guy, nad get it rebuilt for $60 though

If you get one used realy inspect it. I got a used one for $300., I took the cover of and found glass bead all inside it. I guess he wanted to sell it bad so he went and sandblasted it to make it look all nice and not that worn. Then i had to take every single gear apart and clean it realy good, (took longer than i wanted it to) got the D&D rebuild kit and suprisangly the tranny is still going and i only thought it was gonna last a month but its been a stout performer with all the abuse it throw at it

Thats a pretty good price, do you mind me asking me where you live I would pay $60 in a heartbeat to get it rebuilt...
