T-5 rebuild kit?? a do it your self?

My trans is on its way out I have another t-5 i can get and rebuild it? i can take all the time i need. but i dont want to just rebuild it to stock, do they make any kits to make it stonger to hold more POWER
Is this something that my dad and i can do on our own?

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

Hanlon also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If they are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

You will also need a magnetic base and dial indicator to measure the endplay ($20-$40). See http://www.mscdirect.com/PDF.process?pdf=1312&Keyword=Y

The tricky part is that you will need some shims to adjust the endplay in the two shafts: the new bearings will change the clearance. There is no way of telling what it will be until you get to the point that it is time to measure and check the clearances. Halon has the individual shims if you can wait for them. If you can't afford the wait, the auto parts store can sell you some shim stock and you can make your own, or have a machine shop make them for you. The shim stock comes in brass (easy to cut) and steel, in varying thicknesses.

i dont think i would attempt it myself but thats just my 2 cents i would just go have it rebuilt or get a diff transmission cause nobody really likes thier t-5. ppl have said the 2 things ppl dont do themselves on cars are transmissions and rear ends. but if you do it i commend you

trannys are not htat hard. i am taking a manual transaxle and transmission class at my college right now and just got done rebuilding my 2nd T-5. Ive done other trannys in the past and had no problems with them. Just make sure to pay close attention when you are taking the tranny apart. The first T-5 I did i just tore into it and got it all apart and then spent a day trying to figure out where all the parts went. Rear ends I will not touch, but trannys are ok.

As far as rebuild kits, if you are going to be running a lot of power go with the G-Force kit. It is expensive but will hold up. I am going with the D&D 2.95 Super Alloy Gearset for 495. It is stronger than stock and will give u a higher overdrive because of the 2.95 gear instead of the stock 3.35.

if you have a chiltons, and have your dad guide you, you can pop one together in less than 1 week i suppose, I help put one in a bronco at work once, wasnt too hard, it took the mechanic about 2 1/2 days with the book, and worked fine.(Stock Kit) Oh, and Bump...

Key is making it stronger - which would require upgrading your gears and potentially the cluster (or countershaft) - depending on how you go, you may need to upgrade your mainshaft as well (if you go with the z-spec T-5) - all of this really makes one consider alternative options like buying the rebuilt tranny outright. I would call Blumenthal Mfring - I dealt with Larry Church when rebuilding mine, which I did to stock (replacing cluster and 3rd gear) - he was immensely helpful in discussing options to 'strengthen' the T-5. In my case (and perhaps yours) - if I chose a heavier duty T-5, it became very apparent that it was cheaper (or at least much more cost effective) to buy the entire tranny from them built, dyno-tested and warranteed for w/in $100 of buying all the parts separately, and then I don't have to rebuild, which wasn't trivial in terms of time. But since I stayed stock, it cost me much less.
