T-5 rebuilding questions.

I just started tearing into the T-5 i have this past weekend. I did not get too far into it but have a few prelim findings.

First off, i got the tranny from a fellow stangnetter. It's supposed to have a 2.95 1st gear (was changed from a 3.35 in a previous rebuild) but are there any visual cues i can use to confirm that it's a 2.95 first? Maybe count the number of teeth.

Anyway, according to previous owner, the tranny work, but just whines in gear. A quick glance at the gears doesn't show any abnormal wear patterns and the gears themselves look perfect. I cannot actually see any physical wear and tear on any of the internals. With the tranny out of the car, i can easily row through all 5 gears as fast as i can physically move the shifter.

I beleive the whine may be bearing related because of this. I am able to wiggle the input shaft a little bit. I am not sure if this is normal. I can perhaps get 3mm of movement in any direction. Perhaps the input shaft bearing in worn?

I plan on ordering the Hanlon rebuild kit but just trying to see if the input shaft bearing could be bad and the cause of the whine.

Also, any way to correctly ID a steel input shaft bearing retainer? The stocker is aluminum right? I noticed when i degreased the tranny the shaft had some water on it that caused a couple rust spots to appear on the shaft. Is it possible a steel input shaft?
 
ya , if a magnet sticks to the bearing retainer sleeve your all good LOL.

Handlon or D&D will be able to tell you what the countershaft and main gear tooth count would be respectively. Biggest thing to check is the mainshaft, where the rollers ride on the very tip, this should be straight with no grooves. I have seen lots of oil starvation on the t-5's ruin the main and input shafts.
