t-5 tailshaft removal, trouble

I have everything unbolted / unhooked except for the shifter rod that enters the shifter housing,im not sure if that is a roll pin or some type of hex/allen screw that keeps the rod inside the housing,if it is in fact a roll pin would I drive it straight down?or is there some other way of unhooking the rod from the tranny in the front?

are you talking about the tail housing? if so you have to tap out the pin that holds the shifter block(turn it to the side when you do) there will be a spring and a ball under it(dont loose them) tail housing should then slide back

It is a roll pin, but I'm not sure if you can just drive it straight down. I had to replace the bushing in my tailshaft a few years back, and I opted to just have a shop do it instead, after they told me what was involved. I don't think it was much, but it was more than I was willing to do. Good luck!

Ok it was a roll pin,came out easy straight down,I had to go to harbor freight
and get a set of pin punches.BTW, I think the ball fell out cause I heard something drop.The spring is still there.Thanx fellas.

Yeah you have to drive the pin strait down in order to get the tailshaft out as you found out. The shaft is connected to the top cover of the T5 housing. You should find that ball... because it rides under the spring and allows your shifter to stay in gear.

there is a roll are a total of 2 pins you have to tap out

I just used a punch in the garage, figured maybe it would take some force to drive the pin out since it wasn't coming out and I ended up breaking the punch off in the pin. I've tried drilling it and will have to take it to the machine shop unless I can just drive the pin straight through somehow and replace the pin w/ a new one.

Anything think I can drive it out still? I almost don't even want to mess w/ it.

It's easy to drive out. I used a worn drill bit that was the size of the hole. Just hit it straight down and it will fall into a void under the block.

After that, take off the tailhousing while sliding the block off the shift rail Underneath you'll find the roll pin, a ball and a spring.

Installation is easy as well. put the ball in the center neutral position and then put the block with spring inside over the ball. Then slide the tailhousing on while holding the block in place and line the shift rail up with the block while lining up the holes. Then just drive the roll pin through.

There are 4 rolls pins total on the trans. The shifter, one holds the 5th synchro fork on, another holds the block for the shift fork assembly and another holds the reverse idler gear rail in place.

Thanks for the help, but I'm afraid I have a rare case here. My roll pin is not coming out. I have a punch broken off in my roll pin and I've hit it w/ another chisel and it's not coming out at all. I guess I'll take it to the machine shop in the morning since I don't know what else to do.

In the roll pin is bad news, you don't want to use something that actually fits into the roll pin, as that will spread the roll pin in the hole and make it tighter. You want to find something that is actually the same diameter as the pin so you're pushing on the pin's edges. A drill bit upside down works well if you don't care about the bit. You should still be able to get it out she's just going to take some harder hammering than before. Another option with that drill bit if you find one the right size, use it right side down and actually drill the roll pin out, then get yourself a new roll pin.
