T 5 tranny problem

I just had my transmission go out, so I replaced it with a salvage yard 89 T 5. Well, the tranny I got has a problem with 1st gear. It's really hard to get in to gear. Once it's in it drives okay, but most of the time it just grinds like hell and won't go into gear. Also when I park and turn off the car it won't go into first because my car rolls back, so I've started parking it in 2nd. Any idea's of what might be the problem?

Sounds like the syncro and or the blocker ring is bad in 1st gear. Should be a cheap fix considering 1st gear is the 1st gear (no pun intended) on the main shaft, well.. after 5th gear. Take it out and bring it to reputable tranny rebuilder and have it go through it.

k thanks. I also found that it will go into gear when the motor is off, and you can start it and drive it in first no probs but its just going into first from any other gear when the car is running.

Try this.... Push is slightly into first gear, and let the clutch up a LITTLE... Once the clutch engauges just a LITTLE it will go right into gear.

The synchro is shot for first.

That WAS working until tonight. I drove it earlier and it would not go into gear what so ever.

i bet its the shifting fork and the syncro
