I have a 98 GT with a 4r70w tranny and I was wondering if there is anyway I could make a t-5 out of a 97 v6 mustang work in mine. Can a get a difference bell housing or flywheel. I have everything out of a 97 v6 (clutch flywheel bell housing etc). I don’t mind having an auto, but I installed a shift kit and it made no big difference and a stall converter is 700 bucks, so I am thinking about swapping it over if I could. I know I could swap in a t45, but I don’t have anything for it. Any input would be great.

AFAIK, I think they used T5's on the early 4.6 GT's. Like from 96-98.. I could be wrong though. I would prefer the T5 or T45 over the T3650 anyday though

Stock T-5 isn't that great, but you can pick up beefed up T-5(from FRPP and such) alot cheaper then beefed up T-45, T-3650 or T-56 no?

or spend $1300 on a fresh TKO and put an end to the tranny problems. They are rated for 800+ hp.

Just pick up a decent T-45, the can handle up to 400HP. I wish there was a way to use the T-5 as it is easier to yank for a clutch job due to the fact that the transmission is removable from the bellhousing.

Or of course upgrade with a Tremec. . . . .

i guess ill try and find a t-45 and sell the t5, what about the clutch and clutch cables and all that is it the same for a t45 as a t5?

you just need a different bellhousing. call lakewood and see if they make a t-5 bellhousing that bolts to a 4.6 block. keep in mind that you'll need a starter for a t-5 too. I did a TKO swap and only needed a new clutch kit and fork. you will need a new transmission crossmember from a GT, meaning an auto one probably won't fit and you'll need a double hump one from a GT/cobra to accommodate your dual exhaust as opposed to one from a v6, which does not have the double hump for dual exhaust.

try this site... http://go.mrgasket.com/AskTechFormLakewood.aspx?BrandID=5&BrandSelection=6

if you're gonna install a transmission, go ahead and buy a new clutch because it's not worth putting an old one in. i have a used t-45 for sale- $300 with most parts. i would not recommend racing on a t-5, t-45, or tr-3650 platform though. they like to break easy. if you buy parts to put the t-5 in, you'll be spending $250 on parts (clutch kit, fork, throw out bearing, possibly speedo gear) and another $250 on labor to install, not to mention the price of a new bellhousing that will connect the t-5 to the 4.6. lakewood bellhousing are about $550.

about stock ford trannies.
They all have thier weaknesses, t-5's are alright, i don't know much in depth about them but unabusive usage can allow them to hold up to quite a bit of power.

t-45, as a gearbox It is Stout!!! you will rarely see them break the gear box it's self, it's kryptonite is shift forks, they are cast aluminum and will not hold up to abusive throws at all, (i'm on my 3rd t-45 because of shift forks and *caugh* aggresive shiftering) being a pretty strong 6'3' 250lb. doesn't make them look any less like glass either thier syncros aren't world class either.

t-3650, the only advantage i see with it is 5th gear over drive is .62 very nice for a 4.3 gear ratio on the highway, there are going to be Multiple TSB's on this thing coming (stright from a ford service manager's mouth) he is a friend and admits to way to many problems with the t-3650.
