I have a 72 Mach 1 with a 429 motor in. I was wondering if it is possible to get a T-56 to bolt in? I know other guys are running the 5spd in earlier cars with different motors, but im not sure if it will work. Anyone have any info or websites to help me out?
im also considering the richmond ROD 6 spd, but i am not very familiar with it. I know in the earlier cars the transmission tunnel has to be worked on to get them to fit, but i know the 71-73 cars are bigger, but i dont know if the tunnel is bigger on it, i couldnt imagine it being much bigger. How does the Richmond compare to the T56 is the size fitting in the tunnel?
Night and day. To get the T-56 to fit PROPERLY you have to chop the tunnel. To get the ROD to fit you merely have to grind some clearance into the tunnel cross member and enlarge the shifter hole slightly.
The Richmonds are around $3100 while a T56 swapis in the $2400-2800 range. A blueprinted Viper T56 will take 600 lb-ft and I would hope a Richmond could match that.
If i remember correctly, the richmond is only rated to 450 ft-lbs (i may be wrong). I want the richmond but it just can't take the high horses I plan on (this is all years down the road).
The Richmond and the T-56 are rated the same in standard form. The Richmond can be built to handle ANY level of power a classic mustang can pump out. I've seen spec'd road race versions rated at 1000+
Make sure you're not using the aluminum integral bell housing if you are pushing any decent level of power through the T-56
well the motor should have a lot of hp
right now its got the 4 bolt block with a 460 crank, D0VE heads, and CJ intake with a bigger cam, but i plan to put the new CJ frpp heads on and possibly a 514....just depends if i want to put any more $$ in the car.....will this richmond hold up to it? or what would i have to do to make it stronger?
oh yeah, is it the same tranny thats in jegs?
Keep in mind that to break a trans the trans has to be the weak link. Unless you have some major $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in drivetrain/chassis/suspension/tire mods you are never going to break the trans. Unless you are making a full on drag car with slicks I don't think you'll ever be able to break a trans. And if you are making a drag car I think a 6 speed manual is a poor choice
no, not really a drag car, although i will put some slicks on it and take it to the strip occasionally, the car mainly just going to be an awsome street car(to me) which will be driven on nice days and weekends, and might occasionly be driven as a dialy driver for a few days at a time.....i dont abuse my cars, but i definitly run them
so is this the same transmission i can get out of the Summit catalog, or is that not the right one
Yes, same trans. Be advised that they have other ratio sets available than just the standard ones in the catalog. I suggest specing your motor and determining your RPM band. That way you can gear appropriately. I made a program to print out charts with the different trans/rear gear combos to help me decide. Here is the chart for the setup I went with
