Just wondering which transmission is better and what are the goods/bads and differences between the two??? (Besides one being a 6 speed and the other a 5 speed) What is the max torque each can handle???? Thanks

hehe

I dont care what anyone says the TKO is better.. you dont need 6 gears..
it handles more power and you dont have to shift as much.. thats what ill get one of these days..

It comes down to personal preference and what importence you put on transmission refinement. The TKO works fine if you want to keep the cost down and still have a stong tranny. The T-56 shifts much better, is quieter, the extra gear is good for road course racing and when ordered with a 0.50 ratio OD lets you run steep rear end gears while retaining good freeway rpm's. It comes at a price of about $1,000 over a TKO setup. IMO, either one works and which works best for you is a matter of your budget restrictions, whether you like road course or drag racing and how much importance you put on refinement.

So what are the max torque numbers on the two trannies???? I have read about the T-56 in a 03 cobra with a Kenne Bell holding up to 700 pounds of torque and also read of a TKO holding the same.

The TKO is a much stronger tranny. The only benefit of the T56 is your gears are closer together and helps you stay in the power band better. But for strength the TKO is much better

isn't there a company that sells a T-56 with selectable (within certain categories) gearing for each gears? That would simply be awesome.

I have also read about a Terminator T-56 that is built stronger then the stock t-56??? anyone hear of this???

I don't know the ratings of the TKO's but D&D said the T-56 in my car should easily handle 600+ ft-lbs of torque. They are conservatively rated.

D&D will install custom gears for additional cost.

IMO, the TKO's stength isn't "much" better. Maybe marginally better. There are other benefits to the T-56 like refinement (i.e. smoother shifting), better gearing for road course racing, it is much quieter than a T-5, with an 0.50 OD ratio you can run steep gears and keep the highway rpm's down for better mileage. The only real disadvantage of a T-56 compared to a TKO is the extra cost and maybe a little harder installation for Fox cars.

wow people the T-56 is wayyyy better...

They dont use them in 03+ Cobras, Vipers, LS1's, LS6s etc etc for no reason!!!

Its better for a certain market yes. Not necessarily better for price/ performance. I think any tranmission can be built up to handle the power you want though. Its a matter of really getting the gear ratios you want.

Again, i can't find the post but i know someone on here was posting about a company that has options for gear ratios with a t-56 upgraded to handle alot more power also.

If someone has a motor that needs that has an 800+ torque rating then they should be deciding which automatic transmission to buy. In 99% of cars, a T-56 is plenty strong.
