t-stat question

Hey guys

I just installed my new m.g. t-stat.
I only applied gasket sealer to the manifold side of the gasket.
The t-stat housing went on fine.
It's tight now.

Is it still possible that the t-stat is still out of place so that I might have a leak afterwards?
I just made sure it didn't fall out of the manifold.
I figured it would find its place once the housing was bolted on.

Also, I just ordered a taurus fan.

Is there any harness etc you can order for it?

I had the stat drop out of the neck when I put it back on the intake once. I started the car an fluid started leaking immediately. It can slip once in a while.

had it happen here too...didn't take more than 5 seconds for coolant to start spewing

I need to up this thread of mine again.

Just got finished with my t-stat, water pump install.

You guys say it takes a couple seconds for water to start spewing if the gasket or t-stat is not in there right?
I started it up and drove down the block.
It never got up to operating temp.
Up until then no water was leaking BUT the water level in the rad hadn't gone down either.

How long should I drive to test?

The reason I'm asking, I don't have my taurus fan installed yet and don't want to drive too far but I want to make sure the pump is alright.

I used a piece of string to hold the thermostat up tight against the waterneck until it was bolted on. Then just pull the string out through the top of the water neck.

If it didn't leak after a short drive, then I would bet you are in the clear.

It isn't something worth worrying about too much. If there is a leak it will be very noticeable. Just pop the hood every once in a while (like you should after doing any work on the motor), if something is wrong you will notice it.

I'll let it run a little longer tomorrow.
I'll just have to watch the temp very carefuly because I don't have a fan installed.
(If only I had that dang bosch relay :-(

You can let the car run up to ~180* pretty safely - that is when the stat opens. Before that, the fan does not do anything to help you anyhow.

Be sure to let that thing burp a bit - it might save some headaches in the future.

Yep - start with a cold motor so nothing steamy flies out of the rad-cap orifice when you remove the cap.

I let it burp for about 10 mins more after the stat opens (20-30 mins total), but you can let it do it for less than that. I really would wait for your fan, if you can - the real burping occurs when you let it run with the stat open. Hard to do that with no fan (unless you put a huge box fan in front of the car - like they do at dynos).
