Have a friend that just picked up a very clean and well built 86 GT with T's. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of how rare these cars are now. I know that in the past I have heard how many of the T-Top cars are junk because of body twisting but I don't know just how true this really is.

Can someone with more knowledge then me conferm or deny this?

A T-top car falls somewhere in between a 'vert and a hatch in terms of stiffness. Definitely not junk, and any stiffness issues can be remedied with a good set of weld-in sub frame connectors. The biggest problem you'll have with T-tops is water leaks.

As far as production numbers go, last I checked there is no official count. Ford contracted out another company to modify hatches and some coupes to be T-top cars. Since these cars weren't actually fully produced by Ford, they didn't keep very good records of production numbers. Any records that were out there are either lost or hidden now.

ok, thanks for the info. and i do believe that the car he bought has sub frame connectors.... from the sound of it there isn't much this car doesn't have. other then running...... some elelctrical problem but shouldn't be to hard to fix once he gets it.

Man, if you come up with something, LET US KNOW! I'd love to know how many T cars there were. I know as far as T-top cars go, mine isn't super unique (black/gray GT hatch, woo hoo haha), but I'd still like to know.

Even though Ford contracted with Cars & concpets for installation of the T-roof option, that option still had an order code. Of course Ford has that infomation. Why would they not? What manufacturer would not keep records of sales data such as that? Ford may have the T-roof numbers but they'll not just give them out to anybody that contacts them and asks for it. A few people managed to get detailed info out of F/L/M way back then, but not anymore. You will have to pay big bucks and sign lots of legal papers, like Marti Auto (.com) has, or have somebody "sneak" info out for you like other people have done that have published books or that charge you for one-page production reports. The latter group of people have limited production info, though, which only includes certain model years and VINs and their data is by bdystyle, engine (2.3T and 5.0L only), exterior color, and interior trim. Marti Auto has very detailed reports, but only available through the '79 model year so far. They also have "Eminger" invoices (copies of original invoice) but some batches are missing or not found yet. You can get a free report from Ford's Customer Relationship Center for your specific vehicle but those reports sometimes are horribly inaccurate. The CRC can be contacted by phone at 800-392-3673 (U.S.) or 800-565-3673 (Canada).

If anything, it was pretty common to see a 4 eye with t tops. I don't know actual numbers, but sometimes a think a sunroof car is rarer than a t roof car from 81-86

If the statistics of registered GTs @ MustangGT.org are any indication, that may be true...

Percentage of Registered GT Hatchbacks by Roof Type

But it's not true for '85 or '86 Capris...

'85 Capri production numbers by model and option
'86 Capri production numbers by model, option, and color
