Hi, new here. I've been looking at doing a T5 transmission swap from my current C4 transmission. The t5 I'm looking at is from 1993 and comes with the bellhousing. I'm just wondering if the bolt pattern on that 93 bellhousing will match/mate directly with the 1971 302 engine or would it require some adapter plate?

It will bolt up, all SBFs have the same bolt pattern, usually the adapter plates are needed when using a T5 trans with T4 bellhousing(possibly the 3 speed bells as well)

I know it's a little pedantic, but early 289s had a five-bolt bellhousing.

True...don't think I have ever examined an early 289 closely...do the later bells still bolt up minus one bolt though?(there are a lot of bells for various applications that bolt up with 4 or more bolts that hold fine for swaps)

It’ll bolt up. But make sure you get a diaphragm style clutch for it. And if you go with the cable and want to use long tubes you’ll only have a few to choose. I have the mustang Steve cable conversion and love it. Using the 351w swap long tubes and they don’t hang as low as my old long tubes did.
