T5 Help

I have finally gotten all my parts together to convert from the AOD to a T5. Before I start the process of swapping them...I need a little help with the wiring.

Is the hole with the little screw by it for the speedo cable?

What is the top wiring harness for and what is the bottom one for?

What wiring has to be changed inside the car? Do I have to change out the whole harness that runs under the car to the tranny?

Thanks for any help....I am new to this tranny stuff!

yes the hole with the little bolt next to it is for the speedo. i cant remember exactly but one of them (the one on the side i believe) is the reverse switch for your lights. but the other one im not sure about.

The side connector is the reverse ligts switch.

The top wiring connector is the neutral sense switch. This switch enables you to get the engine running codes. If it is miswired or defective, you get a 67 code that doesn't hurt anything but your ability to get the engine running codes from the computer.

I will say that tranny look pretty used for a t5/AOD convertion. Hope you fix what is needed now. OR to the looks of the tranny you may be pulling it back out to fix it soon.

On another note you will love the difference in the car after the swap. it will feel like a totally different car. Good Luck!

Yeah the tranny is used, but my buddy told me it shifted fine when removed. I just need it to last 2-3000 miles anyways while I get everything else together. Im planning within the next year and half the 408W and TKO600 will be in the car. Is there any way to check the tranny before I install it to make sure it works ok? Do those two wiring harnesses just plug into the AOD wiring harness? What changes of wiring are involved inside? Thanks.

yes,and no on the wiring. They do just plug in. IF i remember right all the car were wired for the 5-speeds but a foot long adapter is plugged in the end of the harness so it will plug into the AOD.

So simply unplug the footlong adapter section of harness for the AOD and it should plug right into the t-5.

At least degrease that T-5 first and paint it up. Sure nobody will see it, but it's one less greasy dirty part under your car. Plus who wants to handle a greasy T-5 when you are trying to install it

Thanks for the help. Im cleaning it right now. I put the bell housing in the parts washer at work and it looks new again!

yes , you will feel like you found another 100 hp almost out of it when your done.

1 more tip for you, if you plan on going 3.73 or steeper gears, do yourself a favor and swap out the 8 tooth drive gear on the input shaft for a black 6tooth driven gear, they are $8 and just clip on the shaft. it will allow you to actually correct the speedo w/out using the non-ford, wrong pitched 23 tooth speedo driven gear

if the trans is '89 or older it will have a 7t in there and you can correct to 3.73 w/ a 21 t driven

but if it's '90 or newer it's 8t

The numbers that are close to those on the tag are:

13-52-169

I have been cleaning the tranny with Purple Power and its looking great! I just installed a steel bearing retainer and new seal...before I did this the input shaft had a little play to it....the play is gone now that I replaced the retainer and seal....is this normal? Thanks for all the help.

I just installed a steel throwout bearing retainer and new seal...before I did this the input shaft had a little play to it....the play is gone now that I replaced the retainer and seal....is this normal? Anybody know anything about this? Thanks.

ok a 169 has a 7 tooth, you can correct 3.73 but not 4.10's

yes thats normal on the input shaft.

Side to side play of the input shaft is normal. The input bearing is the missing supporting structure. Same goes for the output shaft. The D/S yoke stablizes it.

WHat you need to check for is in and out play. Put one hand on your input shaft and one on the output shaft and try to simultaneously push and pull them in and out. There should be NO in-and-out movement. (tremec specs 0.000-0.003"" of play)

86.5-89 Mustang 5.0
265 ft-lbs TQ
3.35 - 1st
1.93 - 2nd
1.29 - 3rd
1.00 - 4th
0.68 - 5th
3.15 - R
7 tooth drive gear

The only way I can think of that would cause that, is if the bearing race was spinning in there and wore out the bearing retainer. Or someone forgot to put the shim in it.
