T5 issue / rough clutch feel

I have a problem with my T5 conversion - when I engage/disengage the clutch it feels very rough, like the pedal is scraping on something or rubbing.

I took the cable off and tried the pedal. Silky smooth. Does this mean that it is a trans or clutch problem? Should I have greased the input shaft where the throw out bearing rides? BTW, it is a T5z so it has the better (steel) retainer.

Any ideas or comments?

probably the cable is binding up..

That is what I thought also. I tried a new Ford cable. $40 later it still feels the same...
