T5 Problem, Swapping Input Shafts..etc.........

So i got this 94-95 5.0 T5 for free but it has a bent mainshaft(unconfirmed). I just broke 3rd gear in my 1986 T5 the other day. I know the 95 has a longer input shaft so i thought i'd just switch em, wrong. The newer T5 has a bigger gear(part of the input shaft) and a bigger tapered bearing...(might be smaller, not sure but they're not the same). So now i'm either looking to buy a 94-95 bellhousing or have the input shaft milled down to the same size as the other. Any suggestions? putting that big gear cluster(the 1 piece shaft at the bottom of the trans) in the newer trans isn't an option because i broke some teeth off that as well. Thanks
 
Hmm, something doesn't sound right.

The input shaft between Fox V8 1985.5-1993 and SN95 94-95 T-5's is the same.

Count the number of teeth on the gearining that came out of your fox t-5, If there are 19 teeth on the gear on the shaft and the input shaft snout is 0.590" then you have a 4-banger t-5 in your car. If it's 0.688", then you might have an early non-WC t-5.

BTW, a bent mainshaft isn't all that common. Vibrations in the trans can be caused by other things that are more likely

That's odd, all the information I have seen shows that the 94-95 input shaft is 7.85" long and the 93 and eariler models are 7.18" long.

If you look up the gear ratio's there are some changes between my old 86GT trans and my newer 95GT trans...which is my problem. If i had a fox trans with the same gears as the 95 i would be golden, i took the input shaft and mainshaft to the machine shop today and the mainshaft is bent .027" at least, so i'm in the process of switching all the newer gears/syncros onto the old 86 mainshaft. The input shaft is very hard steel and cant be changed with a lathe...i'll go count the teeth on the old one and new one then report back, hope to get this figured out soon!
 
the 86 old trans has 19T on the input shaft and the 95GT newer one has 23T, so i need a fox length shaft with 23 teeth..the bearing size is also different but i'll deal with that when i get there
EDIT: here are the pilot bearing surface measurements(tip of the input shaft-machined part)

WTF? did i have a 4cyl trans in there to begin with? do they make 23T fox length input shafts? maybe someone swapped input shafts and put in a 4cyl one? i have the tags handy if anyone has a chart, Thanks

EDIT again: i just noticed the identification numbers on the chart, my old one is a 87-88 4cyl trans(#162) and my new one is a 94-95 5.0 trans (#246) I looked up input shafts and i can get a 23T fox length so it looks like all is well..if anybody out there has one for sale PM me

Dur, you are right.


What i MEANT to say was that the input shafts are identical EXCEPT for the overall lenght. Same gear tooth count, bearing collar and pilot bearing snout diameter.

I overlooked the obvious lenght difference in my post

Yes, the changes in gearing are due to a different countergear, 2nd and 3rd gear. Those are the only parts that have been changed. The differences are from 1985.5 to 1989 and then 1990+ has the newer gearset rated for 300 ft-lbs of torque.

Input shafts, 5th gear and 1st gear are all the same between them. (other than the lenght of the input from Fox to Sn95)

One of your transmissions is not what you think it is.
