About to yank out the t5 on my 95 gt before swapping a 351w in. Already have the 300$ master rebuild kit and a summit input shaft bearing retainer on the way. The transmission still shifted into all of its gears last time I drove on it and wasn't popping out of any gears on its own. Sometimes I had to move the shifter a cretain way to shift into 3rd but that was all. It had about 230k miles on it so I'm thinking a rebuild wouldn't be a bad idea. I just bought two dvds from bad shoe productions, one on rebuilding the t5 and the other on rebuilding the 8.8.

I was wondering what parts commonly wear out and need replacement. Do the main shafts and countershaft cluster gear set usually need to be replaced? I expect to find a gear or two on the mainshaft to be missing some teeth and need to be replaced. I can get the countershaft cluster gear set for 150 but am concerned about whether or not the mainshaft usually needs to be replaced. And lastly does the shift fork and linkages commonly go out and need replacement? Thanks for any help

Ryan

All kinds of things go wrong on those trannies, and you never know till you get them apart. Don't overlook the official TTC overhaul manual. It's available for free in PDF format on the the TTC website. If you get in there, and find a bunch of teeth missing on gears, the cost of rebuilding that transmission might be more than just buying another transmission, so be careful before you start swiping the credit card. Generally you will know if you have a tooth off a gear by turning the input shaft. Put the transmission in gear, and turn the input shaft with your hand. If it gets notchy at any point, then it probably has a bent or missing tooth somewhere. The forks bent sometimes if you overshaft the transmission to much. The shift rods generally don't have any problems. That being said, the transmission is pretty easy to rebuild, and can generally be done in an afternoon, even if you are a beginner.

I hear you Kurt, I'll wait until I check her out before getting anything else. I can get a rebuilt t5 for around 650 on ebay. If the cluster gear shaft is out thats 150 to replace, 100 for the input shaft and not sure about how much a main shaft would run. Thanks I'll let ya'll know what I find this weekend

I had a cracked case, a busted retainer, and 2 gears busted on my Tremec 3550. By the time I fixed the case and the gears, it was almost $700. I couldn't believe how much those gears cost.

Is it worth it to put a 330lb ft trans behind a 351?

I don't see why not.depends on what your plans are for the car. I have a stock 94 T-5 behind my 393 & it works fine. I don't drag race or power shift. I think it is the lauching & power shifting the destroys them.

Yeah its really the shock of power shifting and launches that kill the T5 but then again thats any tranny. For spirited and daily driving it is great. I even know a guy with a ****ty 89 tuneport cowmaro 350 supercharged with a t5 that has been DD for 5 years now with no issues.

Yeah It'll probably be mostly stock for now. Might swap the heads and modify my 5.0L turbo kit to fit the 351w. Might toss a small turbo on her and run around 4-6psi. I figure the stock rotating assembly and speed pro hyp. pistons should be good for around 4-475hp easy.

I just tore apart my t5 yesterday and everything looks fantastic No damage on any gears whatsoever. I never missed any gears when shifting and was generally easy on her. Before dissasembly I registered between .003-.004" endplay on the transmission. Already had the rebuild kit so I shouldn't need anything else.
