T5 Tailshaft removal difficulty?

I might be doing gears very soon and was wondering is it easy to remove just the tailshaft housing in the T5 without dropping the tranny so that i can have the speedo gear changed. My mechanic told me to ask to see if people do that. Otherwise i will be ordering a Speedcal for my car since the gearset of my choice will be 3.73s

Also if it is possible. is it a timely job because if so i may as well just order the speedcal which is 100.00 bux i believe

Sure it's possible. You'll have to remove the tranny mount first however, which you may be able to do by loosening the H pipe at the headers, or you may want to remove it all together. Keep in mind that trans mount is what holds the motor horizontal, so put something under the bellhousing, or the front case of the trans to keep it from falling down too hard. You may want to use an adjustable deadman of somesort so you can let the motor tilt back some, which will give access to the bolts that hold the tailshaft in.

Obviously the driveshaft also comes out, and you'll need to drain the transmission.

yea its either gonna be a 6 or 7 or 8th from what i hear, those are the only ones they make. i just need to look up what my factory one is, and look up the one i need for the 3.73 combo. so its not too difficult, assuming driveshaft and exhaust is already out it shouldn't take longer then 1 hour? My mechanic will do this, car will be on a lift and he has all the proper tools including the tranny jack and other supports

and just for kicks heres a old pic of my car in the shop, lol

Sure tranny jack works, kinda overkill though. A screw type deadman would be fine.

Word of warning though, I only work on T5 transmissions. That car would have a t45 I believe, which may be different enough to cause problems.

no, the 94-95 cobras and all other 5pd sn95s in those 2 years have a T5, the 96-98 cobras have the T45. oh ya he has those too, i just didn't realize what they are called.lol my buddy doin the work has a 96 cobra as well. But what was the lil gear on the output shaft called so i can look it up. does ford carry it?

Okay I didn't know the year so I just wanted to make sure I didn't send you off with some false information.

I don't honestly know specifically what the gear is called. Ford parts would have a blow-up of the transmission where they can look each individual piece and part # up though. I would give them a call. If you know a dealer that is also a FRPP dealer they're probably going to be a little smoother to work with.

Speedo Gear

Go here first and enter in the info. You may be able to get away with just changing the driven gear, which any sucker that can turn a wrench can change. You will need to know which Drive gear is in your T5. I just finished rebuilding a T5 out of a '92GT that I plan on putting in my '68 Fastback. That T5 had an 8-tooth drive gear. If you need to change your drive gear, you will need to pull off your shifter first and drive out the roll pin that holds the shift block on the shift rail before you can pull the tailhousing off far enough to change the drive gear. I would not be surprised if you have to drop the transmission so you have enough room to pull the tailhousing off to change the drive gear. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

I think he means to replace the gear that's actually on the output shaft of the trans

Dude i need your help possibly. we swapped the gears on the shaft and now we put everything back and my car wont shift into reverse but it will shift into all the other gears very viotelently or grind or bang while going in, and sometimes i hafta push really hard to force it into gear

Well first thing stop driving it and pull the trans back out.

When you have it out, grab hold of the input shaft and the output shaft and see how much front to back play you have. (push the input shaft backwords, and then push the output shaft forwards, it should be very very slight give if any) If the bearing on the front bearing retainer isn't shimmed correctly, the whole mainshaft and gearset will move around inside of the case when you try to shift, rather than staying put while the synchros engage.

But regardless of the cause, if your trans isn't shifting happy all you can do by running it is hurt it.

ok well im not running it, i left it at his shop and now im without a car. so you think its possible it needs to be reshimmed even tho we didn't touch the inside of the tranny?
