t5 troubles

Im thinkin about pickin up a t5 from a guy. 61,xxx miles. but it doesnt want to shift into third at high rpm. its got an aluminum bellhousing that comes with it. im wantin to make sure its something that i can fix cheaply. any ideas to what it could be?

You're really going to have to get in there to fix that. It's most likely a bad synchro on the third gear cluster. Could also be a bent fork, but that's less likely. If you aren't scared of transmissions, they really aren't that bad to work on. Just lots of little pieces you don't want to lose. You're going to have to pull the main shaft out though to fix that synchro. Might as well do a soft parts rebuild on the whole transmission while you are in there.

+1 on the rebuild kit. No sense in tearing it down, to fix the issue, and not rebuilding it.

If the price makes it a good deal, and you are confident in your mechanical abilitiy, go for it.

Just go slow and take your time.

mechanical abilities are definatly up to it. ive rebuilt a handfull of trannys while in tech college. im a ford tech. jus wondering if anyone had an idea as to what they thought it could be. hes asking 300 and that includes the aluminum bellhousing. thinkin of talkin him down to 250.

I think it's about a bill and a half for soft parts rebuild kit. For $250 it would be a decent deal. The only thing that is really expensive is the gears themselves. Those gears are about $100 piece. If you have to change a couple of gears, you might as well junk the transmission.

Probably just a synchro, but be carefull. If 3rd gear is bad the cost of repair will increase drastically. How much does he want for it?
