I have a 92 gt I night and I’ve been having idle issues. Also after market tach issues. I also get a vss code. Sometimes the tach will not work. It’s hooked up to that harness that goes to transmission. Haven’t cheaked revese light tho. I have a 89 also and noticed they are hooked up different. I uploaded pic of the harness. Tacky is hooked up to the big connector that is in driver kick panel. The trans pic I uploaded shows the connector that mine is missing. I do not see one even on the other side of the tran(pass side) so I’m stumped. Also it has a fuse on the nuettal safety switch under steering wheel. Car turns on without depressing clutch and I believe also pressing clutch. Wondering is there a t5 that dosent have that connector on top? If so can it still be used? The idle surges and I attribute it to a big vacuum leak the brake booster is bad. I can hear hisssing whole time even more when I press brakes. Here is a pic of my trans wiring setup

The 2 prong connector is hooked up to the reverse light instead of the neutral gear switch that’s missing. The aftermarket tack is spicled into one of the wires at the drivers kick panel I think it’s hooked up to a purple wire if not mistaken. I’ll look later .

What a mess. The only T5’s I know of that did not com with the neutral gear switch or NGS ( remember that manual trans cars do not have a neutral safety switch that is only the automatics) are the 91-93 4 cylinder cars. So you either have a 4 cylinder trans or you have a V8 trans with a 4 cylinder cover plate if it will work on a V8 transmission. I would think so but have never tried.

I would move the tach wire out to the coil and check to make sure the ground, key got, and illumination connections are solid.

The wiring at the trans seems sketchy at best.

Would need some better pics, that that is definitely a later T5. Possible an SN95 T5, which won't have the NGS connector.

You can take the NGS off the clutch pedal switch and jump it with a blade fuse. This is wired in parallel. It would be the clear plug on the clutch switch

However, i don't think this is your issue, but it will eliminate it so you can continue troublshooting

Agreed the SN95 T5s don't have NGS switch.

Both are SN95 V6 T5's. The one on the right I pulled from a '98 the one on the left was pulled from a '96 but I think it has been gone through as the top cover is from a later year trans (2005 and later). The V6 T5 is basically a pre-90 WC V8 trans rated strength wise.

The z-spec T5 doesn’t have the switch either.

Their video shows the sensor dangling.

One of my pet peeves is the sheer amount of posts i read labeling this plug as the Neutral Safety. The Fox Mustang only uses a NSS on the AOD cars, and jumps it out on the 5-spd. The manual cars use a clutch safety.

I have a faded memory about the VSS causing hanging idle on SD to MAF swaps. Does this ring any bells?

Yes. It plays a roll as well.

A lot of the Mass Air write-ups out there ignore this, but the mass air cars use the VSS for reference. Not hooking it up can also leak to stalling and hanging idle when coming to a stop.

The speed density cars only use the VSS for cruise control. Non-cruise cars didn't even get the VSS and got a different speedo cable.
