t56 or turbo 400?

C4's can hold up to some pretty good power and they're not THAT expensive to build. My dad built his in his drag car for about $700 with hardened planetaries, racing servos, bands, and clutches with a manual shift valve body. I also have a buddy with a 347 stroker in a notch that had a C4 with a trans brake and reverse manual shift valve body. Held up to his abuse and is still going.

What do you want to do with the car? A build T400 would be an excellent choice for a strip car since you can get consistent quick off the line starts. Unless it has problems, it never misses a gear when you shift. For bracket racing, a T400 would be top of the line choice. If its road race, autocross or just want to have fun, the T56 is the best choice.

I'd have to also be one to throw the C4 on the bon fire. On one hand I agree that they can handle 500-600 ft/lb torque when built properly, but they fall off the reliability wagon after that. Even the ones that are fully rollerized, w/ the billet 6 clutch high gear drum, Vasco input, High volume pump, 6 pinion planetary, Alto red Clutches, Kevlar bands, and Billet 2 ring servo do all kinds of stupid s hit when you try and apply power through them north of that.
I've been there. Trying to avoid caving in to the "Just put a glide in it mentality," I built the best C4 you could using a stock case. What I ended up w/ was a balooning case that prematurely allowed the TB to release, Burned up high gear clutches, and a case that showed signs of the entire rotating assy trying to exit out the rear of the transmissions.

I like the TH400 for a turbo. Regardless of whether you are driving it on the street or the track. Boost is like a drug. W/ any manual trans just as it gets good, you gotta lift to shift. W/ an automatic, you only have to lift because you got where you wanted to go.:nice:

Not sure who built his but I know performance automatic has a super comp c4 with a brake and rev manual valve body that has a lifetime warranty on it good to 1k hp
We ran one in a 03 back in the day and it held up great to a bunch of 10.0 passes in a 3600lb car
