t56 question

I have a tr-3650 in my 99 gt currently.
Do I need a different driveshaft to put a t56 in? I would like to keep the new aluminum one I just got.

I know I need a new tranny crossmember, I figure a little welding and grinding and I can make one, but...

Are the output splines the same?
Are the tranny's the same length?

And what are the gear ratio's?
I searched online and got several conflicting answers.

Matt, That helps a lot. But I already have an aluminum driveshaft, and can make a cross member in 15 minutes.

What I'm trying to find out is if the driveshaft is included in the kit just because of the different spline count on the yoke, or if the shaft is actually a different length than a regular 5spd driveshaft. If it's just the yoke, I can get that for $75 new. Then get the tranny for $1,400. Thus saving about $900.

Anyone know about that driveshaft?

im curious, with the T56 swap, do you need to change to a cobra flywheel/clutch combo or will the standard GT clutch/flywheel work?

Well, the starter goes through the engine block, so switching tranny's doesn't move the starter in or out any, so a diameter change in the flywheel is not needed. And my engine had the 8 bolt cobra flywheel and a 10.5" spec II clutch, so if that works in a tr-3650, it should work in a t56.

no you do not need to changeto a cobra anything. only thing that needsto be changed, aside from the tranny its self, is the crossmember, the driveshaft, and i believe a wireharness... i have read things about needing to fab a reverse lockout, but i believe that only applies to auto to manual. yes a driveshaft is needed because the tranny is longer then the 5 speed.

the rev lock out is so you dont shift fron 4th to rev, since the rev is now up and over. the last thing you want to do is throw it in rev when you are running 120mph. i did not wire up the rev lockout on my T56. it just makes it a little harder to put into reverse. i think it hold 15 lbs ob pressure on the shifter to keep you from shifting into rev rather than 5th.
you have to extend the wires to your reverse lights since the switch is on the opposite side of the trans. you need a 1" shorter driveshaft and a modified crossmember.
the parts i needed to do the swap were clutch disc (viper spec is 26 spline) you dont have to do this if you have a cobra T56, the trans itself. the crossmember and the drive shaft. you may need to notch the trans crossmember or get a new x pipe. my mac is hitting the crossmember.
the swap is very easy total time for mine was 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. i did have access to an overhead lift so this made it a lot easier.

if you need to know anything else just ask me and i can help you out.

the rev lockout is just a pin. it keeps the shifter from moving too far over and accidently going into reverse.

thats the rev lockout on the bottom of the pic

when it get a 12v signal it retracts, allowing you to easily put the car into reverse. if you choose not to run a switch you can easily overpower the lockout. my wife cant do it but then again she cant press the clutch in enough to start the damn car!

You've pretty much nailed it down.

I originally had an auto and now have my reverse wired to the brakes.

Thanks for the great info.
What is the differance between the viper and cobra t56 other than strength?
What are your gear ratios?
I'm looking to get something like 2.8:1 for a first gear. Right now w/ the 3650 I have, 1st gear is 3.38:1 and I have to shift as soon as the car starts to roll.

my viper spec is suppose to hold 900 hp. D&D said they havent heard of any failures yet. the gears are different and all the internals are stronger. the input shaft is 26 spline and i believe the OPS is 31 spline. 1st is a LOT longer and 6th is .50 compared to the cobras .63 (i think)

wow, i just looked at your numbers!! you have 468/555 on a stock tranny!?!?!?

you should look into the viper rather than the cobra T56 with that much power. the cobra one will run you about $2300 for the kit. i would save the extra for the Viper spec
