So I have a buddy that is swapping the T56 out of his 2000 Camaro and putting an automatic in it due to the 6.0 ls and Procharger that is about to be installed.

He is offering me the trans, shifter, RAM clutch, and all the hydraulics for $650. It’s needs synchros and I can swap those out.

Research I’ve been doing has led me to a Lakewood bell housing that will get it mated up to the 331. I already have the same RAM clutch in my car that I’m getting with the transmission so I can just swap out the clutch plates and I’m good to go. I’ve solved the electronic to mechanical speedo issue and the trans crossmember.

My biggest concern is where will this put the shifter. I’m still noodling around trying g to get an answer so if anyone knows definitively it would be much appreciated.

I recall hearing about "Shifter Relocating Kits" and "MGW Shifters" being used to move it closer to the factory location.

I don't know that I ever saw pics or final results tho. It's like 3-ish inches that you have to make up.

I believe that Tremec produces a rebuild kit for that transmission..... Last I looked ( maybe BB) it was in the $600 range.....

The cases are physically the same length. The QuickTime bellhousing appears to be shorter in length than a standard T5 bellhousing so I am wondering if that is where its it made up i.e. moving the transmission forward.

Tremec T5 Fox Body - total length A + B = 26.7"
Tremec GM T56 99-02 LS1 Camaro - total length = 31.25"
Difference of 4.55"

The Lakewood bellhousing (LK9100K) is supposed to be 6.33" from face to face. I believe the stock GM bellhousing is 5.5" but I am still researching that. Also found this info over on First Generation Camaros.net:

The rear most shifter position for the LS T56 is about 29" back from where the bell meets the block. The further forward shifter location on the LS T56 is approximately 19.5" back from the engine block.

So still digging around. I have a couple weeks to make up my mind on buying the trans from my buddy.

If you take the 7 inches from line-B of the T5 diagram from the 26.6 inches of A in Trogdor's post, you get 19.4 inches. O_o

That's preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetty close to line A of the T5 diagram up top. 1 inch! Super simple to makeup with a MGW shifter.

Would have to see what that Magnum tail housing and output shaft cost and if anything else is affected. Might be expensive enough to kill this being a cheap way to move to a six speed.
