T5O-D Fluid change, use Mercon Auto Fluid? or 80W gear oil?

another dealership gem from Nick. my owners manual says the trans fluid does not have a service interval and is good indefinately. 10K is a tiny! service interval for any trans, let alone a stick which does not stress its fluid at all!
not doubting you at all Nick - you are privy to info that many of us (me included) are not.

real-world speaking, i would have no qualms about letting the fluid go for a bit longer than that, and synthetic indefinately if not beaten upon.

Yep. I totally agree with you. It's another way of making money, that's all. But at every 30K we flush them, never at 10K anyway on the V6 Stangs that have T-5s. Tranny fluid is dirt cheap, and it's cheap insurance. I do mine ever 5K or so, but I don't drive it much. When I got my new car (my dads old) he never changed the trans fluid in it.. so when I did the clutch 2 weeks ago, I drained the fluid and it was B-L-A-C-K!!!! I was like OMG WTF!!! 99K on it, and original trans fluid. Flushed the hell out of it and refilled it. I almost smacked him the next time I saw him lol.

yeah, i see your perspective Nick (i change even synthetic every few years, but not nearly as often as you. you probably drive more spirited than I. ).

hey i got one for you - when i got my stang (dealership serviced its whole life!), it appeared to have the original ATF in the T5 (owner said it was never changed; i have all the receipts and there is none for a fluid change).
anyhow, when i drained it, it had the viscosity of ATF, but the thing was, it smelled a bit like gear oil (i know it did not have gear oil in it - only the smell).
I have read several other similar accounts (from people whom i think are pretty savvy) - what are your thoughts? have you come across this or am i just weird?

Yeah, I've seen some trans fluid come out of high mileage T-5s that smelled like that... Just gets old and well used... Has sort of a burnt smell to it, even though it really can't burn in a manual trans unless you road race the car and have it spinning like crazy. The trans fluid that came out of my 90 smelled like gear oil but it def wasn't gear oil. We've got cool guns at work that depenses all different kinds of oil, many guns... I just drain all the fluid, put the drain plug back in... fill it back up with the gun, drain it, and then run another 3-4 quarts through it to get it all out, then fill 'er up.

hey, must be nice to be set up like that at work! that is too anal for me. i am happy to get 2.6 quarts back in there (once). LOL. (i run a hose from the filler to the top of the pass. side of the motor and fill from up top). or sometimes if i cant find the clear tubing, i put the new fluid in mouthful by mouthful.

i used redline and it seemed to shift much easier when cold
