should i go w/ vortech+nitrous or t76 turbo?

Unless he's gong to get REALLY serious with his turbo selection, I don't see how any custom kit is going to be able to best a hard spun S-Trim backed up with spray? There have been guys who’ve knocked down over 600rwhp alone without the aid of nitrous to fatten the torque cure and cool the air charge.

Even if you manage to size it for a compressor that'll best a set up like that in horsepower and torque, it’ll all be at the big end under WOT. It'll be a nuisance to drive on the street for the most part. The power band would be finicky and sluggish under vacuum and lower boost levels then violent and short when it really starts moving some air.

It’d make a great race set up, but its not how I envision a daily driven street car? :shrug:

...and again, this isn't just about what set up would make the most power, or would be the most drivable. In the end he's still starting over with the custom Turbo kit. Where he's only adding nitrous to his existing S-Trim.

In any case, it probably doesn't matter now, since making this thread he's put his S-Trim up for sale.
 
Big turbo cars are not that hard to drive. No harder to drive then big S/C cars. The centrifgal supercharger acts much in the same way as a turbo as far as power band. The turbo does not act as a parasite to the motor however.

I'm not saying big turbo cars are hard to drive, but they must be driven a certain way in order to remain compliant....and even then there's always going to be some measure of compromise in the drivability. As far as big blower S/C cars, I would again tend to agree with you, but an S-Trim is not by any shape of the definition considered a big blower. And although the S/C does suffer from parasitic loss compared to a turbo, it does not suffer from any form off boost lag like a turbo does. Until that exhaust pressure builds, under full throttle the turbo is more of an obstruction than a power adder. This is not an issue with a blower. Airflow is always being made and always at the ready. When its not, its constantly being re circulated back into the inlet side by a bypass valve.

Yes they are. I had a RX-7 R1 and my buddy had a R2. He swapped his twins to a big ass single turbo. Car made 661 rwhp and was a beast. I was so excited when he said lets switch for a couple hours. I didnt realize he was getting the better end of the deal.
Car smelled like gas, backfired when shifted above 7 grand and didnt spool till almost 5500 RPM :shock:
It sucked on the street, woulda been great on the track though.

Now I am not big on centri blowers so IDK just how big they get but when I drove a 99GT with a Novi 2000 on it, it was very nice to drive. Boost came on just befor 3K and wasnt violently there like the turbo car. :shrug:

My buddies single turbo Supra making 819 rwhp was a bitch on the street too. Accelerated pretty decient and then BAM tripple the HP and just all over the place. No wonder those guys only wana race from a roll :nonono:

I wouldn't ditch a working S-trim kit just to start over with a turbo, unless I had that kind of disposable income.

From the start, I would go turbo though. I have been around both types, and that is just what I prefere.

Nothing like the spool of a turbo, feeling the boost come on, and the efficiency of a turbo kit.

Not in any way bashing superchargers. Each has their perks and downfalls. But if I ever were fortunate enough to go turbo on my car, it would be for the real deal, no to just say "I has a turbo!!"

If money were not an issue I would love a small twin turbo setup. Quick spool up and allot of CFM :nice: I just prefer it over a centri S/C. But IMHO you cannot beat a nice twin screw! It makes a small enging feel like a huge engine and the sound.. the sound is just :drool:

Parasitic loss, belt shredding, every other belt issue imaginable, it puts more stress on the tensioner, etc.

I've had three centrifugal 2v's. They're old technology nowadays alongside OHV engines.

Turbo lag, peaky power bands, heat soak, searing under hood temperatures, burnt wires, cracked manifolds, short lived bearings, oil leaks, continuous maintenance.

Exactly what makes turbo’s superior in every way again? :scratch: They’ve all got their draw backs man. Turbo's are no less a pain in the ass than any blower I've seen. More so in my experience when the miles start piling up.

I’ll take the simplicity and low maintenance of my Eaton any day of the week over some complex turbo set up. Parasitic loss be damned.
It gets old.

most likely a 5.4 w/ a 2.6 kb on it...only problem is with the lightning motor there is no hood that can fit....so that's something i'm going to be thinking about here in the next month...as soon as i sell my blower i'm going to be piecing together a bottom end and likewise...i'm going to go with a built 4r70w with a PI stall of some kind...any recommendations would be awesome....i want this to be something different even if i have the blower sticking outta the hood lol....i've heard that it takes a 9 in cowl hood to fit a 5.4 sohc lightning motor with the blower.....so for now it's to the drawing boards...i'll figure something out soon but i'm almost 100% sure i'm keeping the car

Ever consider just running a set of Reichard Racing addapter plates to the 5.4L, then going with the Kenne Bell 2V Mustang kit with the 2.6L upgrade. No worries about crazy clearance issues then? You'd probably get away with a moderate cowl set up...certainly waaaaaay under 9-inches. Probably something in the 3-5" range. :shrug:

You must have had bad luck or I've had great luck. I haven't had a single problem with my car and have only replaced the belt once and that was because of a smaller pulley.

The only thing I've had to do was replace the oil drain line do to it leaking which took a whole 15mins. That was after 4 years and 20,000 miles with the blower.

I'm still not certain you can run compound boost with a Twin Screw. The physics and thermodynamics of it tell me the pressure and heat is going to be too great for the compressor seals and intercooler to overcome.

I have yet to see an example of it anyway. :shrug:
