Tachometers

I would like to know what rpm's I am shifting on. I have a 65 fastback 289 4v with dual exhaust.

I don't necissarily want to have a tachometer permanently mounted in the car.

Here's what I'm wondering: will a motorcycle or snowmobile tachometer work on a car engine? I would just like to hook one up for a few drives and then disconnect it again once I have an idea of the rpms I am shifting at. I don't want to spend much (if any) money on a tach. I do have snowmobiles that would be willing to temporarily donate their tach if that would work.

It has to be switchable to a V8. Otherwise you will get faulty readings.

Exactly!

You may be able to away with setting it for a 4cyln and then dividing your reading by 1/2 (ie the guage says 12,000RPM but your engine is really only doing 6000RPM)

I use a 2" Sun screwed to the radio grill. It is so small that you can hardly notice it because it is in front of the wipers, plus I turn the light off at night. One screw an it's out, but you will have to have a plug for the wires.
