What does everyone here do when they are being tailgated badly, for no real good reason? Imagine you are in heavy traffic keeping a small and just barely safe distance with the car infront of you. Then, someone comes barralling from behind and tails your @ss within inches. They are obviously just trying to push you along to move aside or go faster, but with HEAVY traffic all around, where are they going to go?

Obviously, it isn't smart to make yourself angry for this jerk, or do something aggressive, like brake check them. That's just asking for trouble. So what do you do?

Just recently, I've decided that's a perfect time to decide to use the windshield washer to clean my windshield. While they don't back off, it is entertaining for me. I know it is very effective at getting their front window wet as well. It isn't exactly confirmtational either.

So what do you do?

Usually I ignore them as long as I can, figure if they reared my car, then I can collect so money which never hurts.

If they are gesturing to me, i slowly begin to slow down, talking like 1 to 3 mph per mile. Just enough not for them to notice but enough to start making a difference, hoping that they will eventually give up or a slot will open up allowing them to get by without cutting someone off.

On country roads I just let them pass, during passing zones. These people you don't want to anger anymore, so just ignore them.

I love it too when they finally make it by you and then by some luck they get busted by the cops, priceless.

So you call 911 pretty much every trip you make? At least where I live, that's what would happen

I generally slow down slightly too, but subconciously. If something happens, that gives both of us slightly more time to stop. Sometimes, I wish I drove a car that I didn't care about.

You could be like TrumboneDemon and try to pull a gun on him. lol

If I'm in traffic I just scoot over and let him go by. It doesn't bother me, he's not tailgating me anymore, he's someone elses problem now. I don't see why no one wants to let anyone by.

If no one is in front of me and I'm feeling frisky I usually drop it into 3rd, and run into the upper reaches of 4th, then he's not anywhere near me, lol.

What bothers me is that they think that lane was paved for them and them only and that anyone else in it who isn't driving faster than them is a jerk somehow.

I'm not talking about situations where you are driving in the fast lane slower than people to your right and you could easily get over, and should.

I'm talking about being in bumper to bumper traffic where everyone is driving slower than they would like. The jerk tailgaiting you (as if your the jerk) should just suck it up like the rest of us and go with the flow of crappy traffic.

Or if you are passing another car at a reasonable rate and some jerk tailgates you still. As if the speed limit is for chumps, everyone knows it, and your a jerk for being in the way (and in the lane paved for them only with their anme on it of course).

I love the windsheild wash idea, I should try that.

I just keep my pace and continue focusing on what's in front of me. Until I notice that they get over then I'll speed up.

I was actually in a hurry today and a woman in the left lane was just going way too slow. All three lanes had slow drivers lookin' like they were trying to make a wall. So I tailgated the crap outta her until she slowly edged out enough space for me to get into the middle lane. I was so close to her you probably couldn't fit a soda can between our cars. I have never tailgated anyone near as close to as I did her but I was in a rush to get to work.

Ok, I misunderstood you. You can't pull over in your situation. I'm not used to that because around here there's always a shoulder to hit on these little highways.

if i can i would just open up the lane , otherwise , i let off the gass and just act like i don't see him.
someone actually hit me from behind in my truck the other day because he was tailgating me so bad i couldn't see he was behind me when i hit the brakes , he completely ruined the front of his car and i got away with some scratches and little paint on the bumper guard.

I take my foot completely off of the accelerator. I have literally slowed down to 35 MPH on the expressway.

I agree with slowing down, and I'll often do that, but I don't need people mad at me for no reason. The will just want to pass by and brake check me while giving the finger, which I've had happen before. As read on this forum, some people have anger management issues and you never know who...

I will normally pull the the inside and let the person by, but it was a lot of traffic and that's the lane I eventually wanted.

Anyway, so far my windsheild washer method makes me quite happy. It is purely for my entertainment. And best of all, it looks totally 'accidental' or 'concidental', especially this time of year with wet and salty roads. It doesn't cause any kind of damage, but it just kinda a slap in the face, hopefully reminding them that they 'might' be too close. Last week, there was a dodge truck tailing me far too close for no reason and I tested my method out. It just makes me laugh when the driver behind you has to run their wipers. Hmm, maybe ya shouldn't follow that close!

if i'm on my car (rarely happens) i will slow down and speed match the slowest car i can find for a few miles and let them ride my ass some more. when they are good and pissed (honking and flashing the lights) i continue at a slow pace for another mile. then let them get an opening to pass me in the slow lane, but as soon as they get over i will do a full 4th gear pull and leave them like little dots in the rearview

it works everytime

Pace the car in the next lane if that's an option.

Slow down.

Tap the brakes a few times so they see the lights flashing.

Hold the brake on just so it triggers the light if the above doesn't work.

And finally, brake check if the above two don't work.
