taking off fuel rails

hey, im taking off the lower intake on my 88 5.0 LX, i was wondering how do the fuel rails come off? thanks

There's 4 bolts.. two on each side holding the rails to the intake. REmove them and lay the whole assemply out of the way for the intake replacement. It's not necessary to remove each injector from the rails. Just leave them connected.

if you really want to remove the fuel rail, you need to goto the auto parts store and ask them for the spring release tool for the fuel rails. the fuel rail is two different size's. the kit the auto parts sells comes with like 4 different spring release tool size's.

You will end up having to disconnect at least one of the fittings (fuel pressure or return) in order to rotate the rail assembly out of the way. The fittings are a pain in the ass. Disconnect the pressure side first and make sure you get the clearance you want before doing the return side. You should be able to flop the whole thing over towards the passenger side once the pressure side coupling is disconnected. You'll need "THE TOOL" (loud ominous music in the background) for the couplings. No matter what the packaging says... none of the ones I've tried make it easy to do.

Here's a post from 5spdGT from another thread that may help you out too.

You do not need the fuel line disconnect tool...when you unbolt it from the lower intake (4 bolts) it should swing out of the way...part of the fuel rail was bolted to my head bolted so I removed it and it swung way out of the way so I could install the lower...

The disconnect tools are like $10 bucks for the set at your local parts store but you don't need them...just swing them out of the way when you unbolt everything...hold it up somewhere with tape or bungy cords or whatever you want...

The injectors will pull out (you might need the O-rings for the injectors) because they will most likely come out in pieces or no long serve their purpose (to stop leaks)...oh and to pull the injectors out of the rail and intake just twist them as you pull up evenly and they should "pop" out...with no problems...

Do a search for Jricker...he has a post that has the part #'s for the rubber O-rings...your local parts store might have them if you ask them...and you won't need those part #'s...

The bolt that holds the fuel lines to the head is one of the torqued head bolts - probably not a good idea to remove that one. O-rings seal the rail to the injector and the injectors to the manifold - so once the line(s) are disconnected and the bolts removed just lift up on the rails. Pull in the direction that the injectors are oriented. The injectors may come out with it or not. When you reinstall, examine all 16 o-rings carefully. It's best to replace them all, and lube them up with some oil or grease before reinstalling. Be sure that the holes they go in (rail and manifold) are clean - you want a good seal when it goes back together.
