Teeth on shaft?

My buddy brought his 99 Gt to Ford for a new clutch. While they were changing it they said that the teeth on the shaft was broken!..What is that and how does that happen?..!

Only two things I can think of on this. 1 he broke the teeth on the speedo gear shaft. I doubt it is that. 2 he broke the teeth on the clucth its self. Where the input shaft of the transmisson rides on. I have never heard of this before but I guess anything is possiable

the teeth on the input shaft maybe? ive seen it happen on really nasty motors making tons of torque...but never on a basically stock motor
