Tell me what you thing.... Any Paint Experience!! Would be Helpfull!!!

Hi guys... so this is my first paint job ... it is a base then clear... On the directions on the can of clear it says to sand down with 1500 grit ...the buff .....I am using the door as my test point because I can always mask up the rest of the car and repaint the door..... if I have too as I only ended up using half of the base and half of the clear and the car is pretty much done... Is it ok if I did sand through the clear to just keep going down to the base color... spray a few coats of base again ... then a few coats of clear again .. on just the door .... I actually find this upsetting cause the car looks good from far ... but I had a few drips I was pretty sure were in the clear .. but looks like they may have been a bit further .... so here are some pics... I'm getting really discouraged... I went out and bought some rubbing compound from 3m and a buffer... Have to wait for about half an hour for my camera's batteries to charge ...cause the computer isn't reading the camera.. (battery low) ... but I will get them up asap.. Here are a couple before I started to sand...

These are pics after wet sanding... I used some grease wax remover... and it looked like it shined up all nice.. but once it dried went back to being dull .... is there a wax or something.... to give it that wet look... do you think it is through the clear... ???

I have tried almost everything and I just don't like the way anything looks quite as much as I did when it was freshly done... so one section at a time I am going to sand down to just below the clear coat ... then spray the base at least twice ... the re clear coat it twice ...

Tips I have regarding this is to paint during the day ... less bugs ... and to not finish sand or anything ... just be done with it after the clear coat... I would rather it be not as smooth but be consistant ... as long as there are no drips ... just my opinion...

All I could say with that is go easy....thin coats.

And thats not really a buffer, but a polisher...it'll just take a lot longer for the results

You mentioned one of the tips you are following is to not finish sand...why not?

The reason I don't want to finish sand ... is because.... honestly right after I finished painting the car ... I absolutely loved the color and shine ..... other than a few drips and bugs ... which next time won't be a problem because I am going to definitely wait longer in between coats.. so I think especially if I do a panel at a time ... that I can get a drip-less base and clear on there ... and if I do it during the day ... the bugs won't be attracted to the light in the garage as much .... It was pretty smooth other than the drip and bugs .... I was told I should wet sand and buff that's why I went that route ... but honestly .... just in my opinion ... the car looked pretty sweet after I was done ... If it wasn't for the few drips I would have left it ... and after I sand down the door and re shoot it .. with the base and clear .... making damn sure there are no drips and bugs around ... that'll be it for me ... not scratching the nice new shiny paint job with wet sand paper .... I understand that pro's do this ... but I'm not a pro ... and it just looked better untouched .... I will send a pic of the car before I touched it ....

how do you guys get big pictures up without filling up the space allowed?? I tried that photobucket thing and tried adding url's instead of actual files but seems to be the same thing

do you know anyone close buy like a detalier or a body shop painter you could pay like on the side to help you out. you have the hard part done, the paint job. it's hard to give advice through pics and there are so many products out there to work at different stages and different compounds it will blow your mind. plus that polisher isn't going to do it. try and get someone over there to give you advice and get you in a direction or pick it up from there.

what it is is the paint is probably chemically bonding and requires it to be baked.... alot of clears will have a really dull gloss look it not done correctly. i use ppg system. k36 primer (3 coats and 600 grit wet sand) and sealer (1 coat), then 4 coats base and 4 coats dbc clear. i bake it for 30 min at 140 degrees and then wet sand 1000, check for imperfections, then wet sand 1500 with sand paper round a paint stick to get it smooth as silk. then 2000 the crap out of it til all the sand scratches are gone. 3m glaze and polish at 2000 rpm on the buffer. and dont skimp on the glaze and polish...lay the stuff on and let the chemicals do their work.

like i said in a different post, i just got done with refinishing at wyotech and have some good experiences to share.... if ya need more help specifically, just pm me and im more than happy to help

another thing is flash times. usually 15min is all that is needed between coats. and on the clear. to get it ultra smooth (with clear) on the last coat with as little orange peal as can be, do a double coat, no flash time. do the entire car then re-do immediately. if u use to much IT WILL RUN! but if your comfortable with your technique and can fan it on nicely then go for it. it will help a ton in the sanding process

Thanks allot.. honestly though... I liked how shinny it looked the next day after it was sprayed... only problems I had with the job was the bugs and the drips... so if I sand down a section to more than clear and re-coat it (during the day with less bugs) and be careful not to drip... I did the same thing.. about 15 minutes between coats.. one downfall was probably went on too heavy with the clear.. next time I will give it more time.. I have a ton of extra paint... so I think i am going to re-sand and spray the door and be done with it... it looked so nice in my opinion.. before wet sanding.. I wish I ignored the instructions and just left it.. other than the drips...

thanks ... I will keep that in mind when spraying the clear next time... I am going to leave the rest of the car untouched for now.. but I think it will be easier if I mask of the car and just focus on the door that I sanded too far... If I was going to suggest anything to a first time painter.. I would say do the same thing that I did.. only difference that I would do is let the base dry.... for 24 hours once it was on heavy enough to cover.. than sand it down with a fine grit... then give it one quick once over with the base again.. then after 45 minutes or so then clear coat.. obviously with cleaning and masking in-between... that way your are more likely to get a nice base coat.. and I was told to go with 2 clear coats... I would go with 3 for sure.. but no more..

any local place that can wetsand and polish/glaze the car for ya? Kudos for doing your own paint job, that's something I can't even imagine doing on my own.
