Temp Gauge

Hi all, I have a 1994 Mustang GT with around 125,000 and a manual transmission. I Recently replaced the stock radiator and the alternator, and then performed a cooling flush and an oil change.

Now, when the car sits at idle, the temp gauge will barely make it to the N in Normal. The heat is usually on when testing this. When the engine is rev'd, the temp gauge will sometimes fluctuate very quickly, all the way up past the R in Normal, and then almost as fast go back to its original position below the N. When the gauge does go up like that, the heat starts blowing harder and also feels a lot hotter than it normally does.

I have let it run for an hour or more and the temp gauge never goes past the N unless the engine is rev'd. I am unsure what might cause this, but any help would be much appreciated.

Also the radiator that was installed was described as a radiator that could be used for racing. I don't know if that matters though. :flag:

Never had this problem with my stang, but my bronco did have the same problem. I cleaned the MAF, IAC, and made sure everything was securely connected and put some electrical parts cleaner on the connections. Not sure if that will work on it, but it's worth a shot and worth the extra power gained.

Our Mustangs don't have a spot to bleed air out of, so you have to do it the hard way. If you have a decent-sized hill nearby, warm up the car to operating temp (so the thermostat opens up), park the car on the hill nose-up, then let the car idle for a while. This makes the radiator the highest part of the system and any air will make it way there.

You can do the same thing by jacking the front of the car as high as possible and doing the same thing.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I do plan on cleaning the MAF in the nearby future when i put my cold air intake in.

I did consider that there may be some air in the system causing this, but was unsure how to correct it. I will definately take your advice and jack it up to let it run for a while and hopefully clear up this issue. Thank you again for the help and advice! :D
