Temperature probs give me a hand figuring this out

Ok

For about the past year and a half I haven't had a/c. Got i fixed the other day and now I am having some temp issues.

The only thing that I have changed on the cooling system is going to a 2 core griffin radiator. Other than that the system is stock.

With the a/c off everything is fine. The temp stays right at about 195 while sitting in traffic. Turn the a/c on and watch the temp gauge rise. I haven't overheated it or anything yet but if I had to sit through a couple cycles of a light I am sure that it would come close to overheating. When you get going down the road it cools just fine. Doesn't come above about 195-200. The car currently has a 195 degree t stat in it.

Any ideas? Fan clutch, water pump? How exactly do you check a fan clutch to find out if it is ok? I can't really afford to just throw parts at it and hope something fixes it. Been down that road before and don't want to got here again.

Thanks for an ideas or info

Check the fan clutch by getting the car upt o operating temp, shutting it down, then turning the fan by hand. There should be a great deal of resistance when trying to turn the fan once it's warmed up.

In Dag's test, first I would spin the fan by hand (with the car off!) when the car is cold so you can see a relative difference when spinning it hot later.

Since you do alright at speed, that suggests a fan issue to me (as it did Andy). do you have a fan shroud? Is the fan blade cracked?

An e-fan might help you out here, or renewing the clutch and blade (which can cost a lot more than the e-fan if you already have a 3G).

Do also make sure the fan shroud is sealed around the radiator.

Good luck.

I can reach in and spin it pretty easy. If I just reach in there and just push on it hard it will spin about half a turn before it stops. I can spin it by hand pretty easy with out much resistance. I can feel a little bit of drag but I don't have to put any muscle behind it to spin it. So looks like I am gonna need a new clutch.

If I had 3g upgrade I probably would just get an e-fan but since I don't I will probably replace the clutch. The fan actually looks like it is in pretty good shape which suprised me. Most of the ones I have ever had were full of the stress cracks.

I have the stock shroud mounted to the griffin but it does have a gap down each side. What should I use to block that gap? it is about 3/4" thick.

I don't know that 195-200F is all that bad in traffic with a/c on, considering you have a 195 stat. I dont have a/c and do have a 195 stat, and my temp never moves from 200F.

If you do have probs with the fan definitely fix it, but I am not sure you will see too much temp dif with the change. I am curious though. e- fan would def. be the way to go, if it is in the budget. I know its on my wish list.

Above all else though I would trust Hissin50 and Daggar. They are both really good at this stuff. :hail2:

I use thick weatherstripping from the home store.

You replied while I was typing before. I forgot to check your location to see if it is hot, but a HD clutch is what I used and had good results (this was coupled with a metal fan blade though, which may have affected results). Some folks prefer Oem clutches since they supposedly dont run 'as tight'. I live in the desert and like 'tight' - it sounds like you might too.

Also, if you see silicone leaking down the front (front bumper side) of the clutch's hub, that suggests is needs renewing (the lack of silicone can affect the clutching action in the viscous coupling)
Good luck.

e fan is definitely on my wish list. Right now it stays around 195-200 with the a/c off in traffic. When I turn the a/c on it starts climbing until I get out of traffic and up to speed.

Jason caught what I missed :nice: I did not drink coffee before reading posts.

If you dont get over 200*F for any period of time, you are doing GREAT, esp if you have a 195*F stat (I did not know that was possible). I dont see how you could ask to do better.

FWIW, those temps are not near overheating at all.

Good luck.

I have gotten up to around 245 with the a/c on while stuck in traffic. Granted that is on the stock gauges so I can't be 100% certain of the actual temp. I grabbed a new fan clutch and just finished putting it in. I will have to test it out tomorrow and see how it does. The temp down here has cooled off some (probably around 85 out now). It did real nice on the test drive I took it on and the a/c was actually blowing colder as well.

We'll see how it does tomorrow during the heat of the day which is pretty damn hot down here lately. We put a thermometer out at work the other day and it got up to about 125 in the sun.

Sounds good. Yeah, 245 is a little too hot for comfort. The puter kills (or should kill) the A/C at about 242*F IIRC.

In that climate, I think your next mod should be a real temp gauge. Even a 10 dollar parts store gauge is TONS better than the stocker.
Hard to troubleshoot if you dont have good info to go on. My stocker reads as much as 45*F too cool.

Good luck.
