Well as the time draws near for me to (FINALLY) fire up my engine I have realized that I'm going to have a real problem with the open headers in my garage during break-in and initial drive testing. I live in a quiet suburban neighborhood, on a low-traffic road with cul-de-sacs on both ends of it. Even if my neighbors don't complain, I don't want to spend a few days wearing my shooter's ear muffs!

What I was wondering is; can you buy some sort of convoluted tubing with hose-clamp style connectors to connect my collectors up with the tail pipes just as a temporary setup until I am confortable enough to drive it to a muffler shop? Or should I try to get a muffler guy to come to the house and lay on his back and weld something up? If figure even if he's good he's not going to be able to do a good job in those conditions.

What say ye?

i went to auto zone and used a combo of sleeved reducer connectors and flex pipe to connect to my old exhaust until i got the new exhaust system installed.

Yeah, I'm just too cheap I guess! LOL, funny to say after dropping $20K worth of parts/labor into her.

I've got a 2005 F150 too, guess I could rent a trailer for less than the cost of a temporary exhaust pipe eh?

Your local parts store should carry 6' sections of flex pipe (up to 2-1/2") - it'll cost you $10 or so, plus clamps. Clamp it in place and tie it up as necessary to prevent it from sagging. That's how I got mine to the muffler shop - worked fine

Yup. I would haul it in.

I did run mine up to temp a couple of times through open shorties, but I picked the right time of day and some of my neighbors were actually jealous, rather than whiny!

Header glasspacks could be had for less than $20 each. They're already flanged to bolt right up to your header if you've got long tubes. You could also ask your local exhaust guy to make you a pair. They might have some used glasspacks sitting around.

The cost of a tow truck would likely be around 25 bucks. What's your time worth hunting for a mickey mouse set-up that the shop is either going to toss, or even worse, send home with you to store somewhere?

If you call an exhaust shop they'll probably even arrange the tow and just add it to your bill at their cost.

Lucky you. Around here it's a $40 minimum charge, even if it's just a mile away.

You didn't mention how far the shop is. I drove my open headers to the shop, about 3 miles away. Pretty fun, actually.

I charged more than $25 for a tow back in 1979.

I can rent a trailer for $30 a day. I've got a 'come-along" to pull it up the ramps with. I've been asking around and the local Mustang club has resoundingly recommended a Meineke (don;t laugh please) in a nearby town (about 6 miles), so I'm thinking of towing it myself. The owner of this shop owns 2 classics and 2 late model Mustangs and will personally supervise the job. Getting a pair of 2.5 inch pipes through the small opening on a vert that already has a 3.5 inch driveshaft of going to take time and skill. In addition to that I want a custom X installed under the AOD.

Towing here was $50 for a similar trip a few years ago. I have also driven a car with open headers to a muffler shop before, that drive was not my concern though. I figure I'm going to do a 30 minute break in, then there are going to be a ton of bugs to work out on her before I'm willing to drive beyond poushing distance from the house...LOL. I didn;t want to cruise 50 miles up and down my street 500 times with open headers

im not laughing. before i found about about a local guy who does custom exhaust ART out of his own garage, i always went to a local meineke. they did an excellent job at custom stuff. there was one guy i would always request to do my exhaust, he was an artist with a mig welder. perfect every time.

$18 for clamps & flex pipe. Its what I'm using while "Testing" & untill I'm ready to have the REAL exhaust installed.

that is the exact same reason i put a temporary exhaust on my car. i needed to fine tune it a little before i brought it over to the exhaust place. i spent less than $20 for everything.

Hey, Midas guys and Meineke guys can be great. Depends entirely on the manager and the talent he hires.

I know a couple private companies around here. I don't usually pay more than 30 - 40 bucks Canadian, which is between 25 - 35 US. The furthest I've gotten for this is 15 km. This is just another benefit of being resourcefull and collecting good contacts over the years.

When I had longtubes installed I capped it by plugging my old mufflers straight into the reducers. They slipped right on and I used a pair of exhaust clamps to keep them on. I believe I also bought a pair of reducers from the local parts store. Not the best ground clearance but it was a good temporary exhaust. Actually, this "temporary" fix lasted me a few months until I saved up enough for pipe work.

i am doing the same thing. I have been driving it around like this for about a week, not perfect but will do till I can get to the muffler shop. At least I can test her out in the mean time.

That's great for you, but is it a sound recomendation for others?

I don't think it is even close to realistic for most people.
