Going from a 5spd to 8spd in the Grand Cherokee's with Hemi was worth a little over a second 0-60 and near a second and a half in the 1/4. I believe it was even more significant with the V6 and it's narrower TQ band.
The biggest difference is simply driving around, or towing... when it's got the ability to shift for ~300rpm difference it just always feels "there" and never has to "scream" to do anything.

My biggest gripe with my Suburban is that it needs at least two more gears. Would be a night and day difference. A 10 speed? That would be badass.

Nah, it needs a 1-piece sunshell, an upgraded front pump, a bigger fluid cooler, and a better 1-2 shift servo so it doesn't burn up and leave you stranded.

It needs more gears. Particularly, for towing.

There's just not any real way for that to happen. It's electronically controlled.

Everything is electronically controlled. That doesn't mean it shifts softer when the clutches get old. Our Fusion has 6 gears. Granted, the 6F35, or whatever it came with is kind of known for being a POS. When we first got the car, I was like...hmm, 6 gears is too many. But it drove fine, and I never noticed the shifts. Now that it has almost 100,000 miles on it, I notice the shifts, and they are a little annoying. There has to be a reason they are putting 10 gears in these new cars. I am sure it's a good one. I'm not saying you are going to regret having that versatility down the road, but it's going to shift more than an old transmission, and when it gets old, you are going to notice it.

What you're feeling there is a failure of some kind in the transmission. Probably the same internal defect that I've seen in several of the 6-spd Taurus transmissions where it bleeds pressure through an internal crack causing a harsh shift.

I never had that problem with any of my 4L60s... just the weak points breaking.

Nothing spoiled me like my 5-gear 4spd in my Dodge (kid you not, look it up), the 5R45RFE had two different 2nd gears it used depending on the situation... but was a 4spd, somehow, Chrysler got it right even with an oddball like that, it always used the correct 2nd gear for whatever I was doing with the truck.

Oh no, it's got that problem too. In the Fusion, it's like a solenoid that doesn't hold fluid when it sits. Something like that. No need to research it, because I have no intention of fixing it. It shifts hard until it warms up. That's a known problem. Even in normal driving with the transmission heated up, it shifts noticeably. All automatics do it when they get a few miles on them. This is why I only buy manual transmission cars. I have 3 vehicles, all of them have a clutch.

No, it just genuinely isn't true. There are some bad transmission designs where it happens, but not "all" transmissions as you stated.

The trans in 'the dump truck' shifts like a pro stock, just ask noobs.
DO NOT hold your coffee cup above your lap without a lid on it when it shifts to second gear.
BTW it's a 97 sd turbo diesel (f450)

Hey, I know I am a pessimist. I really hope I am wrong on this one. Just my experience with every single auto transmission car I have ever driven. I would not go out and buy a new 10 speed transmission vehicle. I have been around too long to not be reasonably concerned.
