I have a T-5 world class in my 65 fastback. When ever I start off from a dead stop in first gear, it feels like the car is going to shake itself to pieces. Whenever I start off from a dead stop in second it takes off fine. I have checked for a loose rear end, bad u joints, broken tranny mount, etc. I tried a new clutch and made sure the pressure plate was good. It didn't help. After I get going in second, it easily shifts to first and drives and feels fine. The terrible shaking only happens during the initial start from a dead stop in first. I have a feeling something come apart inside the trans. The car is never raced or shifted hard. Any thoughts?

your axle might be rotating up under acceleration causing a u-joint to bind. In second you wouldn't have as much torque to the wheels so it wouldn't rotate as much. What leafs are you using?

Leaf spring is just standard5 leaf spring. None appear to be broken. Everything feels tight. The shaking started after about two years after in stalled the T-5

you are experiencing what is known as clutch chatter. it can be caused by a number of things, including a bad transmission mount, a bad clutch disc, a bad pressure plate, or a flywheel that needs resurfacing due to heat checking and hard spots. my money is on either the bad clutch disc or a bad pressure plate.

+1 you may want to check motor mounts too.

Prior to tearing it apart to get at the clutch, make sure you have at least 1/4 inch clearance around any part of the engine or tranny that might contact the frame of the car. 3/8 clearance would be better.

You wouldn't believe how much these motors and trannys shake. I had very similar issuses with my t5 and it turned out to be that part of the metal on the tranny mount was vibrating against the tranny crossmember.

Sounded like a rod bearing going bad in 1st.

Oddly it had about 1/8 inch clearance, but needed more.

Good luck...

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a bad motor mount. They look fine when the the car is sitting there. Try opening the hood, start the car, put it in gear and see how much the engine moves when you give it a little gas. BE CAREFUL.
