I like a lot, but I'm still conflicted. I'm shopping for my first real serious vehicle and it's a little daunting.

First, here's a little bit about my vehicle history:

#1. 1960 Ford F-100, mt, rwd V8: First vehicle just to drive back forth five miles to high school. Terrible on ice and snow.

#2. 1987 Yamaha Fazer, mt, 700cc: Broke bones twice with it, but fun;

#3. 1990 Pontiact Firebird, auto, rwd V8: Parents bought it so I could get back and forth to college; lots of electrical problems; terrible on ice and snow and rain.

#4. 1997 Ford Thunderbird, auto, rwd V8: Not too excited about it when we got it to replace the Firebird, but learned to love the comfort and the leather seats; not great on ice, snow, or rain, but I managed.

#5. 1994 Ford Tempo: First car I could afford out of college. Slow, depressing; not great great on ice, snow, or rain, but I manage.

As you can see, I'm not a total stranger to RWD V8s, but what I am a stranger to are modern manual tranmissions. With the old pickup, you have to use some real muscle to get it into gear and when I drove this Mustang today it was like I was trying too hard. It's also a little scary how much power it has. In theory I thought it'd be just like driving the Thunderbird with the addition of shifting, but it seems to have so much more going for it. If I go from driving my Tempo for a week and borrow my mom's Bonneville, I'm amazed at how little effort is required to get the car to go.

So what I'm trying to decide is if I'd be better off with an automatic or if I'll reclaim the fun I had with the F-100 by getting a manual even if it feels odd now. This will be a daily driver for me. I have a twenty mile drive to work on semi-rural roads (not too much traffic, not a lot of stops).

A couple other questions:
It's got the Mach 460 system. Can't tell if it holds multiple CDs or not. How hard is it to switch music while driving stick? The truck I drove didn't have a stereo so I just whistled and hummed a lot.

It's a black car with black interior. I've never had a black car, but it looks sharp. I've heard that A) Dirt will be more apparent than any other color and B) It will cook in the summer

The numbers: 88k miles, $9200 out the door ($7700 for car, rest is tax, title, doc fee); think I can get it down some more. $528 for 6 mos. insurance. Sound high or no? I'm approved up to $14k, don't want to spend any more than $11k, and would prefer to keep it at $9000 or less.

I ran a Carfax report on it and was mildly concerned that the electrical system had been serviced twice about ten thousand miles apart. It's a pretty vauge description so it could be nothing. Any other suggestions or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

fun

I'd say go for it. I had a ton of fun with my 99GT. Get the 5speed you will not regret it. A sports car with an automatic is kind of a joke if you ask me. The 99s did not have the changer, it's a single disk. Get a catback exhaust and you won't be listening to cds anyway.

See if they'll give it to you for 7500, cant hurt. You'll love it. I love mine. The 5 speed isnt bad in daily driving, its more fun imo. 88k miles is pretty good for a 99, mine has right at 100k.

I'm definitely leaning towards it now, though I found a silver one that might be a limited edition that I want to try. Very close in miles and price, I just like the silver better. This is the time in my life to own a car like this when I don't have a wife, kids, or a mortgage to pay.

Music is a huge part of my life (I'm always learning a new instrument) so I might just get an iPod to put faster music switching at my hands.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Find out what that electrical problems is. You obviously know what you want which is good :nice:

My advice is not to get attached to one car. There are THOUSANDS upon thousands of Mustangs in this country and with a little patience and luck you can find the one for you.

Yeah, that's why I started searching online again this morning. I am watching out for certain years that Consumer Reports likes more than others. I'm pretty flexible with colors; there's only a couple I don't like.

The silver one is a little further away, but I might try and get my dad to take a look at it with me this week after my loan check arrives. He's a lot more mechanically inclined than I am.

That year the Mach 460 was single CD only. It didn't change to the 6-disk setup until 2001

I have black leather in my GT. The dirt isn't that bad really.

Also inm the summer the interior is not that hot. I've never had a problem and even light tint will help out a lot

I did a little autotrader search for you area and unfortunately there's not much. However, I still think that you should be able to find a one-owner, adult, used GT from a private seller for less than $10k if you expand your search a little. you may have to travel a few hours, but it can be well worth it.

One more good thing about the 99s is they still had the trusty T45 transmission. I think the TR3650 used in later years is a total POS.

don't know if i'd go that far

as far as the car, like eveyone has said, expand your search a little and you might find a car that's perfect for you. doesn't hurt to drive a couple hundred miles out to find the right car

I got my 2000 for 7800 with 92k on it, so id say paying 75-7800 for the car is fair. Mine has its issues, so it was not top notch shape. But I was tired of looking so I bought out, found out a few weeks later it was a Spring Feature car, only a 1 year run on those... woot.

As an owner of a Black Stang for almost 6 years...I can tell you it's wonderful when it's clean, but not wonderful enough to where I would be tempted to buy another black car again. I'm not lazy by any means, but if you want to drive a swirl free car as a DD.... forget about it.

Might as well get the 5 speed manual since you dont get in heavy traffic.
In my case I drive 25 miles 1 way in heavy Dallas traffic so I went with an auto.
I had a 5 speed Maxima 4 years ago and my foot and leg would go numb from
pushing in the clutch so much.
Black paint is definatly high maintainence and shows every scratch, my Maxima
was also black.
