TFI / Duraspark length differences

I have the original carbed 302 in my 79 with factory Duraspark ignition. I want to swap to a roller 5.0 block soon and want to keep the Duraspark. I recently spoke to a certain distributor company to order another Duraspark distributor (mine has a lot of wear) with a custom advance curve, and was told I would need their 1 1/2" longer HEI style distributor instead.
Is there any difference in the housing length (or shaft length) between the Duraspark and TFI? I've read on the internet where this swap has been done numerous times, and I realize I need a steel gear when swapping it over. The HEI is a good dizzy, I just don't want it in my Ford. I just don't want this thing to turn into an expensive paper weight. Thanks.
