Well, when I get the car running on the road, Ill be using the 302 to get around (the 429 will come later, I wanna save enough to build it up good).

I read in a shop specs book that the 302 from 1968 is rated at 230 HP, and something like 275 torque at the crank. With todays standards, is the 302 still that powerful, or has the horsepower rating gone down? How much at the wheels will a stock 302 make?

Get yourself a late model roller 5.0. Will produce more power and be easy to mod with little things if you choose to make it more peppy.

The 302 aint gonna be in the car for very long (year tops) because a 429 is going in...i was just wondering what the power estimates would be on a 60's 302, and what kind of small mods would give it power. I have, on the side:

Tri-y headers
5.0 mustang electronic distributor
Edelbrock performer RPM manifold, edelbrock 600 CFM carb (got these when I had the plan of stroking and supercharging the stock 302)
flowmaster 50 series mufflers
new valveseals( the engine smokes)

how much of a power increase could i expect with these small parts? and, do these parts complement each other nicely?

Those parts would help. A stock 302 really isn't that powerful, but it depends on your perspective; I'm used to driving 4 cyl cars. 230hp is the old gross rating, it's really about 200hp or 160rwhp (on a good day).

OTOH you could send all those parts to me :D

PS: 30hp gain maybe?

In the early 90's they changed the way HP is rated by manufactures. In the olden days, HP was measured with *no accessories*. Beginning in about '93 I think they started measuring HP *with* the accessories. So 230 HP in 1968 is probably more like 200-210 HP by today's standards.

haha thanks. To me, any motor is powerful that the car I use as my daily driver ( 91 toyota corolla with a 5 speed) the 302, to me, would feel like a motor with a turbo in my perspective. Even though i wont use the motor for long, its good to see what kind of potential this motor has, and even though a 429 is going in, I bought the manifold and carburator long ago, and its basically the only parts that I actually paid for. BUt now i need a new water pump, as the stock one is leaking.
